Keep it as simple as possible. Which means fewer categories, fewer clicks.

You need to try different ways to categorise and display products. Only by testing will you know what works.

Consider also that you if you use variants you may only need one product: scaffold boards.

You need to test and adjust and keep on testing and adjusting - probably for many months. You may even need to rearrange things depending on the season. A mate did this and boosted his sales as he showed the right products on the homepage at the right time.

I think all these questions you're asking are impossible to answer without knowing more about your business, how many products you have etc Even then it's very subjective, there is no right or wrong.

Technically scaffold boards are mostly made of timber. But they have a direct function compared to general building timber. Unless you have a store with thousands of products I would personally go with:

Home > scaffold boards > Product

The big players would have tested what works best. I would look to copy what they are doing such as the earlier separate listings based on sizes.

But if you are using variants for the products you only need:

    Home > scaffold boards

@AM2021 and I have had numerous discussion about their business model. There is no single answer as it all depends on their marketing plan.

What would be the best way to have category and product navigation on a website

    For example

Home > scaffold boards > Product
Home > timber > scaffold boards > product

    Thanks
No one can answer this without knowing what other categories there are and what products are in them.

Yes but variants don't work for all businesses. Some suit individual listings.

Totally agree. Which is why testing is essential.
