Directories submissions

Hi,

I'm making an effort to list on the top 100 directories. How many should I submit to per day/week/month without doing any damage. Will it do any harm if I submit to too many in too short a space of time?

Won't make any difference, besides approval times can vary so even if you submit them all at the same time it can take weeks for them to be approved and then the pages to be crawled by search engines.

Submitting too much won't make any difference, since some of the directories approval time differ from each other. If you have submitted to free directories, maybe you'll have the approval for about a month or two.
Just try to submit to directories everyday, 10 or 20 submissions can do a lot, but remember that approval of it always takes time...

Why are you doing this? If it's for traffic then fine. If it's to improve your ranking then there are far more effective ways to do this.

1 - Build an informative and interesting website that meets the needs of your visitors

2 - Make sure the website meets the google guidelines.

3 - Become known as an expert on the subject. Post on forums and blogs and make yourself known. Get to know the owners of websites related to your business. work on getting links from these websites that endorse your business.

It's a two pronged attack that begins with the website. Get this right and you can then work on link building. But remember, the easier it is to get a link the lower the value of that link.

I am Happy to know that you are doing it for traffic. Most people are ignorant enough to do it for rankings by obtaining low quality directory links.

Debatable. Google did give importance to quality directory links (DMOZ, Yahoo Directory etc.) a while ago but then amended its Webmaster guideline which no longer had that clause. It lead everyone one to believe that directory links are being devalued by Google, no specific case to prove it though.

On the other hand, the penultimate motive of SEO is to get visitors to the website (conversion being the ultimate motive). By getting listed in directories where your target audience is likely to be increases your chance to get clicked. As a residue you also get a link back, low quality but a link is a link at the end of the day.

In my opinion,directory is not a good way to do seo.Too many source,and i dont know which on is better.

Its not a case of which one is better.

Its a case of is your submission relavent to the directory, would a user be pleased to see your listing in that directory.... Also, what is the company like, is your site next to spammy sites, you want to be in a directory that has good standards, who do not accept any old junk - especially any old junk for a submission fee.

Google cant destroy all directories en masse, it would be seen as anti-competitive, they can um and argh, but they cant just devalue them all. Then again, what a large corporation can do, and what they do have are often two seperate things.

What google can do, and what they seem to have been doing is cracking down on the directories that are there purely to make money, with no regard to any quality control.

Hi Chris.

If you have time to spare then by all means submit to directories.
For your info I rank 7th for a term out of 31,200,000 purely because I submitted to 50+ directories using that term as anchor text. I was 350th prior to submitting but it took some time for all the links to propogate.

Can you be 100% sure it was the directory submissions that affected your ranking as opposed to any other changes you made. Maybe it was just Google reindexing the site and giving your a boost. Or perhaps 300 of the sites above your were penalised in some way.

Not saying no to directory submission, I just don't think it will be as effective in 2009 as it was perhaps in 2008.

What you can do is see what site ranks #1 for your search term... and go see which directories THEY are listed in....and copy them

Nothing wrong with directory submissions. If it brings you in some traffic then that's a bonus. Just don't expect the listing to make much difference to your ranking.

As always, the easier a link is to obtain the lower then SEO value of that link.

Well directories submissions is one the most important part of SEO.
you can submit your website to as many directories as you want but be sure that the directories should be of good quality with good page rank and relevant categories.
