Hey Guys,

So i'm investing a lot of money into SEO for my business.

My plan is to submit my website to directories to lay the foundations for SEO, is this a good idea or will it not be worth it?

Thanks guys!

They dont offer you any seo value .

They are good if you can get them high in the serps. Hotfroguk is usually good at that. You might pick up work from the listing.

But in terms of a "good quality backlink" that they aint.

Submitting to the directories would add to my "link juice" thou right? So in terms of quality backlinks i understand directories are not good for this. But as a starting point to generate "link juice" it would help?

Thanks

Standard directories can be of value if you have enough of them, where as other types of links hold much more value. You should target niche directories if anything.

Thanks. I am having my site submitted to 3000, of which i've been told around 50% will be accepted. :)

Then one month after the submission i will put together some packages for SEO, i.e articles, press releases etc.

Yeah they are generally junk those types.... I haven't submitted to free directories in a long time. They are often spammed to hell with every offshore SEO submitting to the same list.

I'd go with paid niche directories.

:( not good. So is it not worth doing? Not even for the link juice?

I'm thinking of doing something similar with the un-paid niche directories, so this is very interesting reading!

From what i've heard, making your website more search engine 'friendly' is a very good place to start, but i believe that both this and backlinking have to be done together to be truly effective.

Hello B_dod,

Thats a good question.

It's a fine balance between quantity and quality. Generally speaking you should stick with web directories within your industry and relating to your keywords / chosen search terms wherever possible.

The key is to pay attention as each directory matters, one poor link to your website can dilute the quality of your good links. Start with directories with high Google PageRank / Alexa Rank and work your way down.

Find the links that your competitors have and try and obtain those first.

Paying for links should be a final option. My recommendation is to use the funds to pay for someone to obtain you good quality industry related links.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

Majority of directories are General in nature and aren't connected or backed by big corporates. You need to know who you're dealing with and who owns these directories:

Firstly, its easy to set one up (although very time-heavy), as you can pick up the scripts for £50 - £100, so being cheap, the kids of the world see something like Dmoz, and figure its a sure money making opportunity, and that's exactly whos behind these things.

Their poorly promoted, and just swap links and pagerank, so they can flog listings to each other - basically its a racket and unworthy of someone's time and energy. Besides, they do the world no good at all, as they are well-know and got devalued by Google some time back.

Nowadays its rare to find one thats recognised by Google as a useful resource, and the majority don't make a penny, never promote themselves and have a waiting list of submissions that'll likely never see the light of day. The rest charge outrageous fees for very little.

But there is some Gold, in the General directory offerings, but will cost to get a link. Unless a directory gets at least 2000 visitors a month, I'd forget it as it won't get the traffic to pass on to any site that submits itself.

The verticals or niche, are the successful ones and some ARE backed by investors, or have good press behind them. Its all about research, rather than chucking money at a bunch of links.

There's gold out there, you just gotta invest some time and look for the targeted links.

I'd suggest getting some general directory links, but dont waste too much time on it, as a lot of general directories have shut down, including some niche ones and a couple of big name ones too eg: MSN Small business directory..

As with most things, you get out of it what you put in.

Although I agree about the merits of decent written listings, you're asking too much of the website/biz owner. Most of directory submitters are actually SEO/web companies who mass submit their clients to free general directories (India SEO's are a safe bet for this activity) and all they want is a free weblink.

They won't spend time sculpting the perfect entry. They won't waste time phoning up some unknown directory for a chat either. The hoards of useless directories won't have the credibility behind them, so their stuffed as soon as they go online.

Had this email the other day:

Thanks for confirming your listing. This email confirms your choice of directory entry.
We currently have 3000 plus requests waiting for review.

But you can push your website to the top of the queue for £69.95 per year

Some waiting list huh - but the best one I saw was this:

Statistics
  • Active Links: 4478
  • Pending Links: 77912

so I doubt anyone want to wait in line with 77'000 others, until their business gets reviewed do you :(

But that's the whole point.
As a directory owner, I don't want the mass submissions, so they get very little back in return (if anything).

If the person submitting is prepared to go a bit further, I do the same for them.
