I use leaflets to promote my business and have tried lots of different designs over the last few years mostly professionally designed and glossy ones. Last year however i tried a d.i.y leaflet that i designed on word all text etc a black and white photo of me printed on pale pink A4 paper.
The return for my industry (carpet cleaning) is usually anywhere between 0.1% - 0.5% per 1,000 however my d.i.y attempt out performed all of the professional leaflets and i got a return of just over 0.5% probably closer to 0.6% allowing for the odd customer who comes back to you months later. I think the reason for the higher return is that people just see a pile of generic glossy leaflets that all look the same and put in the bin whilst mine looks amateurish, local and stands out from the crowd. I did try one printer who has designed all of my so called professional ones in the past but he didn't want to touch my design in its present state and so we came to a compromise, all of my text, no pictures but he would turn it into a glossy looking leaflet, i personally delivered 5,000 of this leaflet and did not get one job, so i think the secret is definitely in its d.i.y look but maybe without the smudges and the poor print quality.
I print these leaflet on pale pink paper brought from W.H. Smiths for £8.99 per ream (500 sheets) and use an old laser printer which only prints b & w (cost me £50) and a new cartridge costs £54 and will print approx 10,000 double sided A4 leaflets, might be a few more. However the print quality is not great and often bits looks a bit smudged. Its also not as cheap as you might think when you add it all up and i am sure i could get an online printer to my word doc on pink A4 of better quality than i can and for the same prince or cheaper, any suggestions?
