The domaining industry is full of fantasists, jokers and pie in the sky dreamers. People who think that their domain is worth thousands and that some sucker will come along and pay off their mortgage for them.
Now I've said that, I'll offer some practical tips.
Firstly, as far as extensions go the ranking is .com>.net>.org>.info
But a generic word in a country specific extension .co.uk, .de .fr can also be extremely valuable.
Leading on from that, generic words and nouns are worth more than made up words, though that's not to say you can't make decent money from a brandable yet made up catchy domain name.
The shorter the better when it comes to domain value. a 2 letter .com will net you hundreds of thousands, a 3 letter .com will also net you thousands but it depends on whether the letters are premium or not. (there are no 2 or 3 letter .coms available to be registered) In reality people prefer domains up to say a maximum of around 9 characters, but a 2 word 13 character domain could be extremely valuable depending on the 2 words.
Search statistics do matter, but again, this may not be the determining factor as far as value goes.
The longer a domain name has been registered the better. However a new domain can still be profitable if it has certain characterisitics.
Hate to be cliched but all in all your domain is worth whatever someone will pay for it.
The problem with the domain market is that the people involved in it like to think it is some type of financial market, they like to puff their chests out and behave like they are highly analytical traders, but in truth it is NOTHING like a financial market and in fact it lacks the most basic, essential and fundamental element of ANY financial market - market makers.
All domain valuation tools are total rubbish. Their valuations are completely meaningless because they are NOT market makers. What does it say about a valuation company when they value your domain at $10,000 but are not willing to buy it from you for $7,000 or $8,000? It means their valuation is nothing other than a number they plucked out of the air. It is a guess, - a prediction that somebody somewhere might pay you $10k for your domain. They certainly don't think it is worth $10k or they'd offer to buy from you on the spot like a proper market maker for a slightly reduced amount. Their valuations are utterly meaningless and don't waste your money paying for a "professional" valuation.
A proper market maker eliminates uncertainty and it eliminates the fantasists, but I doubt we'll see the creation of any market makers in dominaing.
