I need to get some new anti virus software installed. Any recommendations would be most appreciated. I had McAfee installed but I believe there are better options.

Kaspersky, if you have a Barclays account they give you it free but if you don't it's cheaper to buy a CD from amazon (about £20) than it is to download it.

Didn't know AVG had gone downhill. I've only had problems with McAffee and Norton, they seemed to be slow or you had to set them up properly at the beginning to stop them automatically doing checks at random. AVG just installed and worked with the minimum of fuss for me.
I have heard Avast is good though.

I repair pc's for friends and one had avg installed with 56 viruses (found by avast). No av can be 100% up to date but avg just isn't picking up ones that avast, avira etc would.
i use avast on 3 pc, 1 netbook and 1 laptop and not found one virus, and it has a brilliant website warning system built in, warns when the website has a trojan.

Avg 2011 free version has a major bug. Completely stopped Outlook working when I dowloaded it yesterday.

ESET working great for me, also i am big fan of Kasper but now a days going with eset bcoz of this is very light weight and going smooth

I am using a few years ESET NOD 32 Antivirus. It's not free, but really good and does not utilize much computer recourse.

I'd always recommend Avast to clients especially with windows 7. I'd class it as a non-intrusive anti-virus program which is what a lot of people want.
(Something that doesn't pop up every minute to tell you it's doing its job properly!)

Kaspersky got too intrusive for me so dumped it in favour for Eset Security Suite. Eset's site says it's got the best detection out there which is why I bought it but a mate suggested I try a quick scan with Bit Defender which found 5 viruses that had been on my systems for ages. Have swapped now to G-Data Total Security but for some reason it's suddenly started to flag up legit software exe files.

As Tin says, there isn't a "best', so I really don't see the point of looking any further than the one by the makers of the operating system it's designed for:

I think the nod32 antivirus is very good, I think it works better as simply the antivirus rather than the security suite.
I have had nod32 for 3 years and nothing has got past it. One day, I had a bit of issue as it identified a false positive, but I would rather have that problem than the other way.
I use malware for spyware etc.
I'm very happy with it all.

Friend is network manager for a very large organisation & he uses Avast on all his home machines

Yes I looked into it for running on a server and it turned out to be quite expensive.
In the end I went for the ESET NOD32 edition which gives you 1 server plus 5 client licenses.
IMO NOD32 represented the best balance of reputation and value in this environment.

Yes interesting that people say something is the best on the basis that 'they've never had a virus'. Bit like saying my Lion deterrent works because I've never seen a Lion.
I deal with infected computers every week and I can assure people AVG is definately NOT the best. In fact I rate it well down the order in terms of detection of more malicious stuff. Avast is definately a better free option.
And people still believe this ridiculous notion that Macs don't get viruses! They do and ignorance of Mac users is one of the reasons why a high percentage of Macs are being used as botnets for spammers. User ignorance means they download suspicious torrents or software thinking it can't possibly effect their Mac and because of any lack of security software it goes completely unnoticed. Generally Windows users know the risks of torrents or content from untrusted sources and are very careful what they download. Mac users aren't!

I've used several AV programs and settled on Avira for various reasons and after a lot of AV feedback from users on other forums. A common mistake is to think that if one software finds a virus/trojan/malware then it must be better, but in reality McAfee and Bitdefender frequently throw up false-positive results because their heuristic techniques can't tell the difference between malware and perfectly innocent program code. This results in your being unable to use a virus-free program.
Another common mistake is to think that paying for your AV software will get you a better product than a free one. It simply isn't so.
As stated, there is no 'best' as everyone wants a different profile of protection, and also good AV programs eventually become bad ones. But at the moment Avira scores high for me.
