Could I please ask for advice on a situation I find myself in currently, anyone reading my previous posts will probably suggest for me to leave the company as it seems I encounter many issues that would lead most people to move on, unfortunately I am one of many in this company that are disillusioned by the companies actions.
A little history to give you an idea of the situation:
The company is very well known with over 80 years in the business, market leaders, nationwide exposure and sat under a mother company that has multiple interests across the world.
Back in Feb 2012 I was approached, with the backing of the General Manager, with the opportunity of running a trial/project. It was a new initiative that had been introduced by the new GM’s boss at the time (the GM’s boss has left the company) to look at lapsed users of our products, cleanse the data we hold on our customers and identify the reasons behind the losses to competition. This had not been done before in this company.
It was initially ‘sold’ to me as a trial/project leading to a Team Leader (TL)/ Manager position should it be successful.
I was seconded to work alone on the project, the trial was a huge success and became a department in its own right in Jan 2013. As it was a new department and I was the only one in it at that time the company could not create a TL role as there was no team, understandably. Where did this leave me? My secondment ended and I became the only ‘agent’ in the new department.
However as it was a trial to start with, the people I reported to at that time were only temporarily in charge and it was decided to add a reporting management role to a new job being created so that there would be a chain of command in place (albeit remote management) for when the team expanded, that happened in Jan 2013.
So I had created a department based on a concept that had exceeded the expectations of all involved and the company had put in place a reporting manager ready for expansion.
Since Jan 2013
The next stage was to employee two new agents to then create a team, they would be trained, mentored and guided by me and I would report to the new manager. I had full interaction and involvement during this process and we chose 2 candidates that we gave the jobs to, this was in June 2013.
In January 2013 during the first meeting between myself and my new manager it was clearly expressed that when the new agents are recruited the process of creating a TL role would happen.
To make it clear, I have never at any point assumed that the TL role would automatically be mine, as it would be a new role in the company it would have to be advertised and interviews performed to choose the correct candidate and I have never had a problem with this.
Skipping forward to the present day
I had a meeting with my manager last Friday, it was an informal meeting, with HR present to discuss my issues with progression and to actually define the intentions of the company toward the department. The meeting was at my request as the communication from my manager had deteriorated and this was affecting the entire team.
This was not my only issue but it was the primary one, I wanted to have clarity on whether or not a TL role would be raised as my manager had continually told me that it would be, every quarter I would ask what is happening with the TL role and I was told each time that it my manager would be raising it and I should wait to see it appear on the ‘board’ (intranet). I even have an email from my manager stating that the TL role would be ‘raised as agreed with the GM’.
During the meeting on Friday I was told by my manager that they do not intend on raising the job role for TL now or in the short term.
I asked my manager to why I had been told by her continually over the past 18 months that it would be raised, she had no answer to this but stated ‘ I have never put in the request as I didn’t think it would be approved’.
I understand that priorities change in business but I do feel like I have been mislead and lied to.
My role in the department even though it is unofficial is seen as the creator/leader of the department, I have performed all duties that a TL/manager would normally perform without being paid any more than I was initially, again I understand that sometimes people need to perform the duties of a TL/Manager before getting a role like that.
Here is my question:
Where do I stand with this? I have been lied to by my manager, she admitted this during the meeting, which has kept me in the role under false pretences. I have asked as an action from the meeting for clarification from the GM to the position of the job role being created and to give me an honest answer, either way I am not happy with the way my manager has dealt with this but what options are open to me? HR didnt seem phased that a manager had been lying about a job role being created.
To understand the impact of the department we have been responsible for winning back over 550 customers, bringing in a profit of approx. £410k, reclaiming our products from customers that no longer use them, saving £132k, improving a sales lead to call ratio from 9% in 2012 to now achieving 27%, all these improvements and changes are made by myself and the team without the involvement of the manager as she is remote and working on the project her role was created for. Along with those financial gains we as a department have also identified where the company is wasting money, put in place procedures on how to monitor and prevent these losses which has saved over £995k all these figures since March 2012, not bad for a department of 3 people created on a flip board?!
Since the trial and every quarter since all target/expections have been exceeded.
I am very proud of the department I have created but if it is time to move on then so be it, but I need to have honesty so that I can go to a new employer with an understanding of why I left this role.
Any advice would be appreciated
Kind Regards
Mr Cus
