I've just started looking at where companies ranking higher than ourselves in google listings have their backlinks, and have noticed that some of them have their backlinks behind keywords appearing randomly within the text of unrelated articles, on unrelated sites with high rankings.

These keywords have no relevance to the sentence that they have been placed in, such that the sentence no longer makes sense.

My question is, Is this kind of practice likely to be productive in the long term, or will it come back and bite them on the arse at some point?

From what you’re saying it looks like paid for links on high PR sites. They can be very lucrative however there are risks associated with them.

The main risks with these kind of schemes is that if Google were to discover them then your site could be penalised for buying links or they could simply de-index the pages where your links are placed on, thus making them all worthless and you having zero SEO gain.

If this was an avenue (paid links) you were looking to go down then the safer option would be create another 15-20 page website, optimised for your main keywords with various links to your main site. And then point any paid links to this site, so if anything untoward were to happen then your main site will be safe. More work I know, however a safer option in the long term than risking your main site.

Do not go down that road - Googles algorithm can pick up on sites that try to game the system.

Just ensure you sprinkle your keywords properly in the content and do all the tags etc plus cross linking all your website pages.

Content is really what counts - think of the reader.

What exactly are you trying to do? Can you be specific, as 'identifying backlinks' is really general. are you talking about your site, competitors site, anchor text analysis IP rage analysis, site wide link identification, homepage link identification, overall geo footprint etc?

Opensiteexplorer for the win.

Other regular tools include Majestic (though their indexed links appear lacking compared to others recently). Also, SEMRush, which gives good intel on what keywords a domain ranks for (sometimes you wouldn't have thought of these keywords at all).

Spinning crap articles to hell and back then filling your backlinks and spreading on blog networks and article sites might work in the short term, but be sure that one Google update or another will devalue them to zilch. What panda/farmer/fresh didn't clean up, will be in due course.

Publish remarkable content on high PR sites, backlink to them for added link love with the traditional online marketing 101 techniques, set up some microsites and interlink in moderation, and you'll build an online property portfolio to rival Monopoly enthusiasts on their best days.

if a back link from unrelated is sent site with unrelated textwould it has Contrary effect on target site?

Some people claim that Google bowling, a form of negative linkbuilding, does work. Many of us are skeptical.

Generally speaking, links have SOME positive effect. They either add weight to a term you want to rank for, or one you don't. Sometimes not enough weight to make a difference, but every little helps ;)

IMHO, there are no such things as bad links. If it carries 0 weight, then it's irrelevant. If it carries positive weight, then it's a win (whether for intended keywords or as a helper with the general meme or short tail stem of other phrases). It will NOT carry negative weight. If links could carry negative weight, there's about 10,000 blackhatters out there that would start up negative SEO agencies in a heartbeat, and bury the competition instead of building the money sites.
