Are you a Christian?

I've wasted too much time arguing with ignorant religious people, I've now come to just pity them and humour them like they're retarded.

I'm not going to take you to task over that remark, I will leave it to BDW who I have suddenly found a new respect for given a post like this.

Haha love it, i wish i could do the same but i fear that this religious **** actually gets considered by people of lesser knowledge than the likes of me and you so i feel i have a duty as an atheist to stop them.

It's an analogy. Do you speak to retarded people as you do a normal person? If you do then you are being cruel to the retard because they wont understand you.

Not clever , not funny at all; in fact pretty pathetic and that is me being kind.

Probably not clever or funny but very true.

My uncle was Downs, my nephew is Downs. As such I'm qualified to say that although it is delivered badly, Massey is correct.

Offensive or not, the truth is still the truth don't you think Moby?

I wasn't trying to be clever or funny, I was stating the way I will be talking to religious people from now on, I'll work on a more simple form of communication for you.

No. I employ a couple of Down's syndrome lads and I talk to them exactly the way I would talk to you. Yes, they like to give me a big hug every morning but that's just their way; one of the them can add up faster than I can use a calculator while the other if you could not see him I would defy you to tell that he suffers from downs.

So you believe people who are religious are retarded?
I would have thought that anyone who has such a simplistic view of the world is best sticking to the most simplistic form of communication; that way it will work in perfect harmony with their thought processes.

Are you even reading my posts?

This is literally the dumbest argument I've ever had with someone, you don't seem to understand anything anyone is saying.

You can find it as offensive as you like. You employ Downs people. I have loved relatives who are Downs people. I don't give them back at the end of the day. As such I'm more entitled to be offended by Massey's comments than you are.

The fact that I am not is because I am able to look at it objectively. Let's take your own analogy of employing a Downs person.

You cannot rattle off a set of sequential instructions to them the same way as you can to a "normal" individual.

If someone took the mickey out of my nephew and upset him then I'd slot them, but if someone stated a fact in a way that didn't upset them personally I wouldn't waste my time getting offended by it.

Neither should you because it's a pointless excercise mate.

How so? You wrote that you humour people who have a religious belief in the same way as you would someone who is retarded; did you not?

How is that different from equating people of a religious persuasion as being retarded?

You are entitled to your opinion but at least stick to it or better still keep your offensive remarks to yourself.

I think there is something rather sad in religious people. I pray for them. They follow man's ideal or man's interpretation rather than the truth of God. The book is the truth.

Accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour is very different to following religion with all its complications and ceremonies and oddities and unneccesary doings.

On a whole i would say treating people who are religious with kid gloves is the way to go. If Mike likes to do that who are you to judge?

I know you are not one of those religious types that require kid gloves but more religious people do than do not. If Mike wants to make life easier by branding them all, why is he wrong?

I too find the majority of religious people need humouring and seem to be living on a different world to me.

It is also a fact that most religious people judge atheists as evil cretins outside the truth. Infact i as a logical man of the world know that the views most religious people hold of atheists are far more politically incorrect than Mike's personal preference statement.

We're all different; I don't agree with what you are saying and have thrown customers off of the premises for saying what you would call the truth. It might be a pointless exercise to you, but it's the way I choose to interact with such people.

I also interact exactly the same way with people who mock my beliefs.

I think there are indeed people of all kinds who seem to need to be treated with kid gloves. Religious or not. Male, female, able-bodied, disabled, all sorts, it is like a queue of want to be offended.

People have their own tongues and free will to say what they want to say. We also have the free will to be offended or offended not. It is better to get on with it and to know that often, more often than not there is no real intention to hurt. It is as Massey says, we are in different worlds!

What have I proved to be true?

That religious people need kid gloves....

In my opinion anyone who talks about something as sure of themselves as you are needs kid gloves. Anyone staking their entire life on something other than a chinese whisper needs kid gloves and treating differently to others.

I can tell you that when you type the following words on this forum "i talk to the lord and the lord speaks to me" you are lying. You have a weak mind that is very easily exposed to the placebo effect.

I disagree with you Massey but I you can treat me with Kid Gloves if you want to, it is better than a thick ear of course it is.

Anyway, I am off to bed, I have got my red wine tonight. Sleep well and God bless you friend.

You are having a giraffe ... aren't you?

.

This is the problem with schools, they are not a place of learning they are a place of brainwashing. I was a non-believer probably for far longer than you have been and I did not come to faith on a whim. The evidence is there regardless what your teacher fed you. Plus, do some actual research into evolution and DNA and Information Theory and realy think about probabilities and also look up the definition of faith and do some reasearch into Big Bang Theory. Aethism is a religion and you believe in things with no proof and no hard evidence.

Dear Consistency
Aethism is a religion based on unsupported faith. I came to Christ very late and he not only talked to me he proved his relationship with me in so many ways I have not a shred of dout in me concerning his existence. Aethists unfortunately have weak minds and are easily brainwashed. They have no proof in what they believe. The small amount of evidence for evolution was largely discredited before it was put into textbooks and yet it is still repeated. The very mechanics of evolution 'beneficial mutations' has been descredited in many ways over and over again. They just do not happn and even if they did the closer we get to the prsent (as more complex forms developed) the less time there is for beneficial mutations to happen. According to evolutionitst modern man appeared 40,000 years ago. Do you really think a complex entity such as we are could have evolved by random mutations in a few ten thousands of years between proto humans and modern? It defies logic and can only be supported by blind unreasoning faith.

How is one supposed to talk to people who base their entire life on one book? Ignores hundreds of years of scientific research and academic discoveries because one book is the 'holy truth' a poorly translated book that's been added to over time, something that's supposed to be 'eternal' is added to... It's embarrassingly stupid.

Very few people of faith ignore scientific research or academic discoveries and most if not all would freely admit that the Bible is at best a written translation of the oral tradition of a tribe of uneducated desert dwelling, superstitious people.

That does not take away from the fact that they also believe that in among all the "chaff" there is a "truth" that they choose to live their lives by.

Why should they be held to ridicule because of their beliefs?

I find most atheists to be the basest of beings and their amoral selfishness responsible for most of the ills in the world today; however I also recognise that they are entitled to hold the views they do.

Why can't you do the same?

That's probably one of the biggest piles of self serving, unadulterated cr*p I have seen posted this forum.

You obviously have very little use for reason because the sheer scale of your assumptions leaves absolutely no room for anything remotely resembling common sense.

Why is it that you pick and choose the questions or theories that you answer or respond to and "poo poo" the responses that you don't agree with?

I don't think I do. I tend to respond to those posts which interest me and which I believe I have personal insight into or knowledge of; unlike some I am not an expert on everything and rarely if ever "poo poo" other peoples point of view.

I don't believe in turning the other cheek and am quite happy to fight fire with fire, trade insults and what have you. I have never tried to convert anyone to my beliefs but will never stand by while the base "what's in it for me" types insult them or belittle them because they don't have the brain to understand them.

Moby I am an atheist, and I do not think I cause any 'ills' in the World.

Why, am I one - well I was brought up to choose my own religion, as I got older I found it very hard, (and had no hankering to give myself to something) that to me, is false, simply because it cannot be proved!

That the person sitting next to me, happens to believe, is their choice, but I struggle to see why you feel and think that about atheists.

I do not put myself on a higher plain than a religious person, so long as they keep their beliefs (and do not do as the JW) do, and come banging on the door) then so be it.

In my family (the older generation our Catholic) they had no choice - back then. I find it is they, who look down on us non believers of the family in a pitying manner, as if we are incapable of feeling and love because of our lack of religion.

Each to their own is my motto, and I cannot see why the need to try and score points and scorn believers or non believers, at the end of the day we are ALL human.

When a person commits a crime, you cannot tell by looking at them, whether they believe or not; my view is that as many believers as non believers commit and cause crimes in this World.

I also wonder, how many of the people who are religious understand what it is they are believing in, and not simply following in the footsteps of their family.

Fine I can hear what you're saying. Since reasoned people and religious people are fundementally diametrically opposed I'll leave this debate because niether side will every agree with the other on this topic.

Atheism is not a religion. Atheists are not the ones being brainwashed. It is not up to us to prove what we believe it is up to you. Evolution has more credibility than religion ever has which is why we treat evolution as fact.

Stop trolling you brainwashed fruit.

What Mobyme fails to recognise is more people will have died over religious wars than any other. Look at the Romans, The Middle England years, william the conqueror, Henry the eighth, all barstads that followed god and went around killing people for fun.

Look at Libya now, do you know why gaddaffi wants to fight to the end? Because he reckons he'll be a religious martyr. Have you ever heard such un-logical nonsense?

What also amazes me is how these modern religions freely brand each other as stupid and outside of the truth, as well as branding religions before the coming of "jesus" as tosh, very bigoted.

Look how distorted the original bible story has become, for all the people of today know there could have been a very credible religion speaking of a creator years before the bible, thousands of years, the bible could simply be a work of inspiration from many prior stories.

Anyone alive that claims to know the truth is full of rubbish and deserves to be ignored and mocked until these idiotic thoughts leave their mind.

That's a very interesting post Pop's.

Most of the people with a similar view to your own would usually describe themselves as Agnostic rather than Atheist and there are very substantial differences.

I think that you are right to be a non-believer if given your background you could not find anything to believe in and it somewhat exposes the lie used by many that being bought up in a religious surrounding somehow robs you of the ability to think for yourself; it's something that I have never really been able to argue myself with any conviction even though I didn't believe it, as I wasn't bought up in such a household.

Am I right to blame the ills of the world on non believers; probably not, however I find the gulf between us virtually unbridgeable given their egocentric view of the world.

You and I would get along famously in real life because I don't think the question of my religion or your atheism would ever be raised purely out of respect for one another; which is of course the way it should be.
