Anyone interested in a 'Do Follow' PR6 Link

The posts wont show untill its been accepted by the moderator, no different to looking at a forum like this with post full of Shite and repsonding to the ones that take your fancy.

And who has to wade through the posts to sort the wheat from the chaff? You are totally missing the point.

When someone comments on my blog I have to read the comment, decide if it's spam and either can it or approve it. I currently have 73 out standing comments, quickly glancing through them it seems every single one is spam. I have to spend my valuable time looking through the posts to make sure I don't spam can a legit comment.

Let me clarify my view.

If the OP had said something like "I've found a really good blog about fishing and it's PR6, if there are any fishing experts who could add some value you might perhaps secure yourself a decent link for your troubles" I would have had no problem with that. Blog owners want people to comment, they want to engage.

What I objected to was, and I quote...

You type your comment with your chosen anchor and assuming it gets approved, hey presto a PR6 do-follow.

I interpreted this as encouraging people to have a punt and to hell with the fact that a real human has to moderate the comments. Comment spam is bad, you should only ever comment in blogs when you have something relevant to say that adds value.

This is all just MY HUMBLE OPINION.

You can spend hours wading thorugh all the comments weeding out the crud. If the blog is a vanity project (ie you don't earn money from it) then the moderating just becomes a pain and something that needs doing every single day. In the end you just delete the whole lot because it's too much work trying to find he gold in the effluence.

Count yourself lucky.
I logged in to a blog over the weekend which I had forgotten about for a month to find 2,600+ comments waiting to be approved

edit to add: that riminds me, does anyone know the core file for changing the number of comments to display (and trash) at the same time in the WP admin?
I used to have this set at 200 in one of my old versions of WP

I use simple the Re-Captcha plugin which at least blocks auto spam. Might help.

Re-captcha has been cracked by a spammer known as The Dark One and he is planning on wheeling it out in a JS plugin spam framework app later this year or early next.

I've always found the best way to cut out comment spam is to ajax the comment posting process. That way you have the post URL in an external JS file. Never had any problems with auto-spam using that.

Cutting out the drivel is something I've not been able to find a good solution for. They don't even seem to stop for nofollow. I guess you could remove the URL field.

It's only an experimental blog so after deleting about 500 I had an idea.

I used the MySQL database tools, changed the email address, poster name, poster URL, comment written etc. of all 2000 comments, then approved them

No idea what it will do, but I can soon delete them again afterwards.

Why are some people so bloody negative? When a guy comes on and offers something that may have value to others, he should be thanked. If you don't like what the guy is offering then fair enough forget it but don't spend time trying to knock it! What about giving something yourself instead of being negative. Sorry for my rant but this negativity gets me down.

• the subject of the blog post
• when it was published
• how many links are on the page
• the diversity of the links: narrow/medium/wide. e.g. all comment links being to sites about web design is narrow, whereas comment links going to narrowboat holidays, opticians, travel, SEO and Harrow plumbers is wide

Why do people feel the need to respond so negatively to these type of posts, Relavant posts help in Seo, a good blog will be moderated and if the content is poor it wont be added.
