Is there such a bad Industry for adwords,

Whenever we first start a campaign it seems ok then all of a sudden it dies off and we get really poor quality, now getting people asking for jobs .....

We are in the security industry, CCTV and Alarms I know the industry can be quiet so not expecting a lot

Often it’s because you run out of potential leads. There is a limit to the number of people looking for cctv locally and once they have all seen your adverts that’s it. For a localised service you need to constantly change adverts, campaigns, landing pages. Do lots of split testing. Run hundreds of different adverts. You could experiment with picture or even video ads. You can’t just fire and forget. You need to update and adjust daily. Note also your landing pages need to be optimised to adverts. You can’t use your standard pages.

Better leads can often be obtained with a really good GBP.

Every industry is different, and it depends what type of campaign you are running; e.g. search versus display etc, plus how you set them up and target/track them. As @fisicx says, it's not set and forget, the initial keyword targeting, setup and ongoing optimisation of all elements is key.

Automated campaigns like performance max, and target CPA based search with display added are often poor too, as Google Ai needs good conversion data and initial targeting to work well.

Most campaigns we look at/audit are setup and working very badly, essentially wasting money on irrelevant searches. A tightly targeted commercially focused search campaign should never waste money, as you should only show ads for potential customers who search for what you're offering.

Do you have any concept of just how much work that would be or how much it would cost ?

Unless you had a team of minions beavering away for free doing all that, it would take a small business all day, every day, to complete even a fraction of it.

Neither do they have the money to outsource it to "experts" who suggest every small business needs to spend dozens of hours each week on this.

I used to spend about 40 minutes a day tweaking adverts and landing pages. Once you get into a routine it’s not complicated or time consuming. Within a month or two you should have the campaign pretty much on track.

What type of Ads are you running? We've seen this with Pmax, to be honest I don't know many people who have success with Pmax campaigns, we feel handing over control to ai doesn't work very well for us.

You have to remember for ai to work it needs a target and a result:

Example: We have a general Ad for Printed Banners, our target is events and businesses - most of our customers don't complete checkout as they like to deal with one of our design team on a one to one basis until they are 100% happy with the proof (so no result picked up by ai). However, a middle age mum, spots our advert and buys a very small banner for a birthday party and completes checkout, the ai sees a result - and boom! All our budget is pushed towards middle aged mums who will almost never need a banner and even if the odd one did, it would be a very small order. Ai spends all of our budget with very little return.

Manual control is more time consuming but gives you the control to make your Ads efficient.

I'm not suggesting this is the same for every business, if you sell standard items and the majority completes checkout, it may work much better.
