40 year old trainee Electrician

Hello all,

I am looking for advice regard obtaining a job as an Electrician's mate? A good friend of mine was made redundant in October last year and soon decided to train up as an Electrician. He is currently enrolled on a 2 year course at Preston College and would like to get some work as a mate in order to complete his apprenticeship.

Any advice or information would be appreciated?

Many thanks,

Paul

What sort of things do they teach you on this electricians mate course? im not an electrician but i have been part of about 100 house rewires so i got my knowledge from hands on, a 2 year course seems a bit long to me,.

Cheers Massey,

I believe it's a City and Guilds Electrical Installation qualification course...The first course is for 1 year which allows qualification for a 2nd course if desired. I know he has done 3 tests so far out of 12 or 15 tests and scored 'credits' in all 3.
His aim is to become a SoleTrader Electrician and he believes employment as a 'mate' will help.

Paul,

You will find that he will need to do more than 2 years at college to get to the standard that is required these days in order to work for yourself as an electrician. That is of course as a legit registered electrician.

I get on a regular basis, phone calls, emails, letters from people all looking for that important work experience and offering their services for free.

Its not something that I have personally taken up (I wouldn't have anyone working for me for free) but it does prove that there are lots of people out there being told that they can become an electrician quickly and earn a small fortune in a short space of time.

As saxondale has pointed out, it is a lot longer than as advertised and its definately an ongoing process.

The whole industry has had a big shake up over the last 5 years and things are going to be changed again in terms of training and qualifications which will just add further confusion to the industry.

Its probably true to say that the real money to be made is in the training centres / companies that tell people they can be a spark in a week if they just part with £3k+

If your friend is training at a college, then get him to let the tutors know that he is looking for work experience, many electrical companies go to the colleges looking for newly trained or training sparks?

Get him to walk in to local electrical companies asking for work? Personal contact is far more professional and he will have nothing to lose.

Get him to write a personal letter to electrical contracting companies around his area asking for some work experience?

I have a nice letter that I am going to reply to this week, asking for the very same thing.

For obvious reasons I cannot post all the contents but to sum it up the letter is asking for my help as they have been advised by their tutor to get some work experience by working aloneside a qualified electrician.

The offer of weekend work and outside of there college course times, together with a personal discription i.e. age, hardworking etc, etc.

I hope this helps?
