Advertising in the Sunday Times/Mail on Sunday

Has anyone advertised in any newspaper Sunday magazines and what kind of response have you had?
Thanks for any information.

In a previous role I placed adverts in the Mail on Sunday's 'you' magazine.

We had a favourable response but the biggest issue was the price per publication (seem to remember a full page ad 3-4 years ago was at least 25k)!

IIRC the main reason was the readership/circulation figures warranted such a price.

Another point to consider is that it's only effective for a week (and of that week only realistically for a couple of days) whereas an ad in a monthly somewhere else may be viewed more often and by a larger number of people (passing the magazine to friends/colleagues etc).

Almost any other magazine will be cheaper than the sunday supplements (or at least I was told that at the time)!

Hope this helps?

Thanks James
I was thinking more of the smaller adds, the times have a page with smaller adds grouped together and was wondering if anyone has gone down this route?

Hi there Roy,

All depends on the product being advertised I'm afraid. What works for some, doesn't work for others.

If it's what we spoke about offline once before, then I think there are other options that would suit your product better.

Regards,

Selina

It looked a good idea at the time. A few extra visits to the website resulted. No sales yet. Maybe the product was not suited as per comment. Product is a travel sickness visor, a new concept.
It is at gamlinfortravel(dot)co(dot)uk
Where would be a good place to advertize, then?

In a publication heavily targetted at the travel / health market I'd suggest.

Unless you have products which are of mass appeal, it will be quite hard to get a decent ROI. Whatever you do though, don't pay the standard rate card. Get your ads prepared and place them at the last minute to get the best price. Some people I know use a company called web windows who buy and resell last minute space from the large dailies. You could start with them.

I know a company that is advertising in a the business to business section of the times and getting a very very very good response!

I know this because I've become one of there clients, after reading the Times!

It's not so much what type of response will I get - but a case of is my proposition/offer/business good enough to generate a good response - so you pay a large part in it. Try to offer something special or a one off bonus for all callers from that paper - that tends to motivate people a bit more.

Good luck.

A few years back I had a 2 page spread in YOU magazine. Full editoral lots of pictures etc etc.

It did drive some business but no where near the level required to have covered the cost if I had paid for it.

I have tested and tested national newspapers by getting editorals in them and all have produced business but again if I had been paying I would have been gutted.

Nothing produced the ROI of the web in my experience.

That would also echo my experiences...last winter we had a product featured at the top of the Daily Mail Gift Guide and although we had strong sales on it, the profit generated would not have covered the insert cost had we paid.
