New business requires website and hosting

Hi, after thinking long and hard about setting up the website and hosting side of things for my new business I have decided to let the experts do this for me. I am actually looking for 2 websites, the first is for a driveway cleaning business, probably no more than 4 pages. The other website will be for a specialised motorcycle delivery service, again no more than 4 pages (at the most). Both sites will require hosting. All replies will be answered via pm/phone.........

Hi Kevin,

I'm afraid we can't help with the website design side of things, but there are plenty of members on here that can.

For hosting we can certainly help, we host several hundred UKBF members who all speak very highly of our service. Cannot really recommend a package at the moment as it will depend on the scripting technology your website designer decides to use.

One of the nice points about our plans Kevin is the fact they allow you to host more than one domain under one account. The benefit of this is that you only have one login to control multiple domains saving you time and money :)

Yeah, unlimited everything MySQL databases etc. I have 3 of my own and I source from America as well so don't know how many they have.

jdpos... £400 for unlimited? I'll upload my video editing collection now. That's approximately 400 Terrabytes of bandwidth I'll need per month, and approximately 80 TB of disk space.

I'm going to set a crontab to create 100,000,000,000 mysql databases every milisecond if that's okay with you. After-all, it's unlimited isn't it? :)

Yeah. If you want to do that then do it. It doesn't matter to me if you use 1mb of webspace and 1 db and 1mb bandwidth. I still make my money!

isnt this going a little off OP topic? you could take the server dispute to another forum between you :) now that the OP knows its an impossible task.

The thing is Sandra he thinks his server(s) are unlimited. That's all we're getting at.

I agree with the talk about unlimited not being accurate, but I would love to see any host in the world cope with the above....

But then again, even if it isnt possible, unlimited does mean just that... So go for it ;)

Ok back on subject then.

Kevin,

First go get your domain name(s). Some where like ukreg.com would be ideal. Signup and get those domains (ideally if you can get both the .com and .co.uk then do so).

Second go get some hosting - ukreg do provide hosting however there are various other reputatble hosts. There are some reputable hosts on here which are reliable - my advice would be to stay away from a reseller (these are people who have bought a reseller account through another host and are basically selling it on - the hosting industry is littered with them and they tend to be more hassle than they are worth). If you want to look outside the forum try 1and1.co.uk or similar. Ideally you don't need a huge bandwidth or amount of space however you will need something that can handle a couple of domain names (alternatively get a seperate account for each).

The above should come to around £60-£100 depending on who you go with. The key is that you get your domains seperately as if you ever decide to move host, getting your domain released can be problomatic... this way you always stay in control of your domain names!

Now you just need to sort a budget out for your sites...

Just a quick one for you. UK Reg are Fasthosts. Do a google search on them ;)

If you like your credit card details/personal details/passwords being accessed by hackers on numerous occasions, feel free to go with UK Reg.

My advice to you, from personal experience with UK Reg, is to stay clear.

Because I missed it I just want to do my last post on this thread. Unlimited is another way of saying you get as much space as you need. This is what is provided to me by my brother. So if you want 'loads' of webspace etc PM me;)

Ok, so they have had some problems - support however is excellent!

Ukreg aren't the only people to have been hacked of late... i've never had any problems with them!

It's the same thing as always, some people get affected some don't. You either go with the majority or you don't at the end of the day it's up to you.

I'd say leaving your customers over the busiest holiday period without access to their accounts for 7+ days is not "excellent support".

Enough said... You are the minority when it comes to the UKREG/Fasthosts "company". They're crap.

Personally, I use GeniusHost. There prices are very low (no doubt they are a reseller), but their support is phenominal - very personable.

It was the first time I had set up a website, but they have helped so much I am now going to be setting a further two up.

Take a look at the GeniusHost site. (and no, it isn't an affiliate link - I just think they're excellent.

Here are some reviews from WebHostingStuff.com.

As you can see, I (and others) think they're great.

Have a look at http://www.paceretail.co.uk and then speak to Andrew Brown about your requirements as I think you may find that your actual needs may vary once you find out what other options are available to drive traffic to your site, and ultimately convert to business.

Hi Rob,

Is your site one of theirs, or is it a Joomla site?

For the OP, if the site you require is that simple, can you not use some open source software - such as Joomla, OSCommerce etc (depending on whether you even need people to buy through the site too).

For 4 pages of information, you could have a perfectly good site built for free by you - the forums for each of the previously mentioned tools are busy and helpful. You could then buy hosting of the most basic package very cheap - as long as they will have consistent up-time, I doubt you will be hitting 100Gb a month (I may be wrong).

Don't spend a fortune when you don't have to. I'm sure people will disagree with me on some of this, but it very much depends on what the OP needs.

Need to add on:
It is more than likely you will need a shopping cart, so add one onto or get a free web programme that will do that.

If you have loads to spend, then get an all-singing all-dancing website. I don't believe you have to though.

My site is a content managed site as I have no requirement for a shopping cart...yet.

Pace Retail specialise in Webshops with product feeds etc so are ideal for new startups wanting a one-stop shop. Also, they have some reasonably sized customers who turnover nice five figures per month. Check the testimonials as it's the customer comments that cut through the hype.

If Every little helps, then why not get a lot?

Not sure where the shopping cart comes in for the OP. He is wanting a site for driveways and motorcyle delivery. Not the sort of thing you need a cart for and he did state just 4 page sites.

Booking a motorcycle delivery could be taken using a webshop, ie: take the money and allow them to book the details online perhaps. Only a suggestion, but I thought it may differentiate the service from the others.

Think out of the box, but what happens when it's a sphere?
