Travel laptop

I'm in Tokyo right now, and I've come to the conclusion that my travel laptop is entirely inadequate.

It's enough to use general office apps and do some light web work, but it fails woefully at doing anything else, like media editing.

I've always been a bit leery of buying a powerful laptop, as I prefer to use desktops with full size keyboards and screens, but maybe the time has come. I still intend to keep my main PC as my home desktop.

What laptop do you guys use?

13 inch M2 Mac Air.

I switched from a MS lappy years ago and never want to go back. Apple products are more expensive but the benefits (for me) far outweigh the cost.

I was using a Surface Pro 9, and whilst i hate touch screens, overall it was my favorite laptop. It was however freezing with the intense model work, so I upgraded to a Dell Precision 5550 with I9-10885H and 64g Ram - its not once frozen, but the user experience isnt as good. I would never go to Mac again, but that is because i use too many Microsoft products. A Mac may very well suit you best for Media. Eventually ill go back to a surface pro.

I agree. My 13" M1 MacBook Air is fantastic and the battery life is excellent.

You need a discrete gpu for media editing. Either get a media editing laptop from a b2b department instead of consumer gear. Most of the computer manufactory have one. Or get a gaming rig usally beefy. Both options are approaching the £1000 range. Or if you are going to be on WiFi all the time, just get a shadowpc and edit it the cloud. This service gives you a virtual pc, it is mainly for gaming but a usiness subscription is available. €30 pm I belive.Might take a little bit to upload video from your local drive although if you are downloading files to edit then it will be quicker. You can link the shadowpc and your local laptop to whatever cloud service you use.

I think if I wanted to do that, I would just enable remote login to my main desktop PC. The main problem would be getting potentially large raw files to the destination - hotel WiFi isn't usually great for file transfer.

That'd work if your pc has a decent gpu. I assumed you just had the laptop. Could you use a torrent from your laptop? I take it you have the files on a USB drive or something with you?

The files will be on the recording device's storage (i.e. an SD card). I'd transfer them to the laptop and upload them.

Torrenting wouldn't be any faster, unless there are multiple seeds. I'd be the only seed and the only downloader.

Dells Alienware brand does beefy laptops if you want a windows machine

I'm using HP ZBook Firefly 14 G7 Mobile Workstation with 2x 27 inch screens, keyboard and mouse, all set up through the Plugable docking station. Never had any problems or freezes. All previous laptops slowed down when I was working with multiple apps etc.

Yesss... but I'm not really going to be able to carry around 2 x 27" screens when I'm travelling halfway round the world.

This is my home setup. Laptop it self is 14 inch so small enough to carry around. What I'm saying is that laptop is powerful to handle all the tasks etc I've been home PC guy all my life and had both but at some point syncing laptop-PC got pointless. Now the laptop is connected only via 1 cable and I can use it as laptop or like home PC.

I'm perfectly aware that you can get a laptop that can handle all your tasks. However, I have a number of customisations to my PC that means that I prefer to upgrade rather than buy an entire new PC when I need to, and the options are more limited when it comes to a laptop.

I agree re upgrades and I was same as you. It took me over a year to convince myself to switch from PC to laptop. Very happy that I did the switch
