Wife has a bad back at present (she fell off a horse) so I've been taking care of the dogs, which means I don't have time to run. Saturday I was on my feet for most of the day, at the science museum (go see the mathematics exhibition!!) and then at football. Then I had to run through Fulham to catch a bus, in order to get a plane home.

Yesterday I tried to run, and it hurt like hell! Managed a 5k but felt terrible afterwards. Going to either run tomorrow, or cycle to work tomorrow and run on Wednesday.

First decent run since my calf went, 11.6k in about an hour and five minutes. I did some light running on a treadmill on holiday, then did a 5k the weekend before last. Was in Dubai for a week so did a few runs on a treadmill, getting up to 7k. Then caught a cold.

Thursday I did a 5k, and thought i was taking a risk today going out again so soon. Really glad to be back into proper distances.

:D. yeah, I know, but hopefully it'll inspire one or two to get their trainers out. I've only been running seriously for about five or six years (I'm 52), so it's never too late.

Took my running stuff to London at the weekend, intending to run from Hammersmith to Chiswick bridge along the river. Should have been about 10k. Realised when I got to the airport I didn't have my trainers :(

10k on Monday, 5k last nght. Probably do a light jog on Saturday morning, then Sunday it's the half marathon. Reasonably confident I'll get in around 2 hours 20. If all goes really well, it may be closer to 2 hours, but I HAVE to keep my pace down at the start.

About 2hrs 11minutes, which is ok but I was hoping to get closer to 2 hours. I don't think I'll ever walk again, mind you.

Two and a bit weeks before the next half marathon. I was out at 5.45 today for a 5k, long run on Saturday before a week in Germany. Then hopefully a long run next weekend, then some light work before the half marathon.

I'm doing more work than I did last year, so hoping to improve my time. However, the 18k I did on Sunday hurt like hell. I'd not really eaten properly for it, so hopefully that was the issue. It's pasta for dinner for the next few nights though.

Just signed up for my first 10k race. I started the couch to 5k in Jan and was very happy with the result 27 min. Since then I try and run at least three times a week, a 3k run or 2k fast run, then a 5k then anything more than 5k usually around 6/7. My problem though is food! recovery food, pre run food, meals, diets, I just cant be doing with all the different advice and suggestions.

I have also just signed up for my first 10k this year.

I was a sprinter when I was younger (100m) and then a powerlifter for many years, so its safe to say I haven't built myself for, nor was I genetically predisposed to distance running of any kind. Therefore, I set myself a target last year of running a 5k without stopping (many would think that is easy, I found it very hard), and got it in the middle of last year. This year my target is to do a 10k without stopping - currently at around 7.5km and improving a lot. I've got until October to get the 10 and I don't think that will be an issue.
Not sure though if I do hit that target whether to crack on and aim for a half marathon next year...don't love running when I've probably already done enough damage to my knees with powerlifting...but I need something to aim for...

Well done both of you. It's hard to go out, but a great feeling when you get back.

While food is important (and complicated), water is key. Drink well a few hours before you go out, and if you're doing a longer run then drink lots for a day or two beforehand. I don't eat anything in particular unless I'm planning a longer run, but do make sure I have some carbs after a run. That's really a recovery thing, rather than preparation. If your going more than 10k, then eat some slow burn carbs before - whole grain pasta is ideal.

I ran the Edinburgh Mens' 10k last year, and it finished in Murrayfield. Every time we go past now, I mention I was presented with a medal in there :D

I got my 5k medal in my town of Caernarfon, the kids have told me to take it of now :D

Are these all medals for taking part by the way?? Medals are for winners.......

Just taking part makes you a winner - hence the medals! Apart from my local 10k who give the medals to the kids taking part in the fun run..

I started running 6 years ago, do 10ks and half marathons and from personal experience, and talking to marathon and ultra runners, don't get hung up about food or water.

Apparently it only really becomes relevant when running for more than 2 or 3 hours. I've heard a lot about protein shakes but have never bothered about them myself.

Just back from a lovely run in the sun - it's actually shining in the West of Scotland this evening :)

Before the half last year, I laughed at the idea of a medal for taking part. Once I'd finished it felt great to have it on :D

You can get it personalised with your finishing time engraved in a little slot on the medal, but for me it's really just a memento of doing the run. It's no different to the t-shirt you get.

I can get on board with medals for taking part no problem - like you say its just the same as a t-shirt. Can't cope with the idea that everyone taking part is a winner though. Not sure how I'm going to handle that whole concept once my daughter goes to school....

You people are nuts! If you want to stay fit, do some physical work - simples!

Yesterday I unloaded and stacked a truck load of full-sized plasterboard sheets, full-sized 22mm chipboard sheets, boxes and boxes of other building materials. As it used to say on the Shell adverts "There's plenty to do!" (Or something along those lines.)

Just carry and stack half-cwt sacks of cement and when you've finished that, do some roofing; that always clears the sinuses and limbers up the muscles! If you must prove your physical prowess, do something that adds value to your life. Build a shed, tarmac the drive, lay concrete, cut down trees, chop wood, wax polish the misses, anything with a constructive outcome will do!

If you want to get from A to B, running really is not the way to do this. God (or some other mystical being) in her infinite wisdom, gave us cars. Use the bloody things! You arrive relaxed, calm and if you have been listening to Radio 4, informed.

Running - you arrived out of breath, sweaty and confused. You also smell nasty.

Cycling is even worse! Last week some OAP in the Highlands ran into a deer on his bicycle and died. The deer was unhurt. As they say on 'Thought for the Day' "There's a message in there for all of us!"

Yes I do all that, as well as running, and going to the gym 6 times a week....

All that training through the harsh winter without missing a day has all been worth it.
I have done the work and I can enjoy the morning spring training runs in better weather knowing the miles are in the bank for some longer runs!

My wife goes to the gym several time a week and she is another one of you Munro-baggers, as is one other mad woman who works here. It's all very depressing! They gab on about crossing raging streams and sleeping in bothies - and spend not inconsiderable sums on clothing and footwear!

For example, she handed me a fleece that she had bought and it seemed to weigh nothing. For all I know, it could have been just bubble-wrap covered in nylon - about £120. This is a flimsy piece of nothing that you put on under whatever it is that you put on top and is supposed to keep the wearer warm. Just like bubble-wrap!

I have work boots that were reduced to £45 at the local hardware store. They are waterproof, warm, extremely comfortable and take seconds to put on and off. She has things for £200 that need to be 'broken-in' and take a team of experts following precise instructions as to which lace goes where about two hours to put on.

Taking them off seems to involve sophisticated equipment and require her to be be flat on the ground, whilst other Munro-baggers pull at both ends.

Just over 19k on Saturday, much better than last week and feeling pretty good about running again. I'm in Germany this week at an exhibition, which means being on my feet most of the day. That makes running in the evening really difficult, so I'm aiming to get out for a couple of 5ks in the mornings before the show.

12 last Friday, then cycled to work on Monday and Wednesday which is around 16k each way. Ran 6k Tuesday evening, day off today (going to give blood this evening) but aiming to be out for another 12k tomorrow.

Squeezed in a 10k walk with the dogs on Sunday. I've never been this fit before!
