feel a bit lonely as the only mamil on here.

Just back from south of France, very close to Mont Ventoux. I could recommend it as a place for you to find new friends. Swarms of mamil's everywhere. Including some, or rather quite a lot, who think that sweating and panting at less than walking pace up a 2,000m high mountain is fun!

"it can get windy at the summit, especially with the mistral, wind speeds as high as 320 km/h (200 mph) have been recorded. The wind blows at 90+ km/h (56+ mph) 240 days a year"

Incredible place, its like a lunar landscape at the top.

No plan, just going out and running. Being a bit more careful about what I eat and drink too.

I'm close to my limit as to what I can do without taking on water, and holding a bottle for a couple of hours would be a pain. I may look at a backpack with a water bottle in, or use some small bottles on a belt.

December was a bit of a disaster, thanks to being busy/drunk at weekends or the weather working against me. I took my running stuff to Ireland for Christmas, and only got as far as the front door on one occasion. The prospect of running into sideways ran turned me back. I tried a long run before Christmas, and had to stop because I was running into the wind.

I had a really painful 5k on Sunday (I'd been suffering from a stomach upset all day) and managed a slow 10k on Tuesday. I'm hoping for a 10k tonight, but looking outside it may be a swim rather than a run.

I've set myself a goal of running 1000k this year, which means 20k per week. I know that's achievable most weeks, but travelling and the weather may restrict that.

The other issue is I've applied to cycle the Ring of Kerry in early July, which is a 180k ride. There's several issues here, the main ones being I don't own a bike and I've only ridden once in the last 35 years. So, I'll need some serious training between now and then, which may impact on my running time.

@MikeJ I know what you mean by disaster! December is a month for chilling, eating, drinking and generally seeing family and friends so don't feel too bad.

I spent a lot of time at the gym trying strengthening stuff. It was good. Didn't miss outdoor running...

And congrats on signing up for that bike ride! Hope you have a good training schedule planned out!

After leaving a smelly trail behind me for a few months, I am going to try soaking my shirts in white vinegar before washing to try to freshen them up.

    Anyone else have tips?

    G

What are you wearing? (to run in I mean, not now). I find dry-fit shirts are much better than normal t-shirts.

Did the 10k last night, not particularly quick but I was more set on finishing it than going fast. Came in around 56 minutes. Feel better today than I did yesterday, so will go for a longer run over the weekend, snow permitting.

Hello Mike, been using Ron Hill shirts for a long time. The key to the problem appears to be the artificial fabric, as there are loads of threads all over the internet about problems in getting rod of smells. It would be cynical to think the makers deliberately dont make them easy to clean.

In chilly weather (1 degree this morning) I use an undershirt, happens to be a thick underarmour one today.

    Do something like this....

    http://www.runnersworld.com/ask-coach-jenny/the-worlds-simplest-learn-to-run-program

Mine was a bit more structured, starting with a one minute walk, one minute run, repeated 10 times. Over 6 weeks it built up to a 30 minute run. Forget speed, that will come later. Don't try to do too much, and doing anything is better than doing nothing.

I was never a runner (but never overweight), but dedicated time to it two or three times per week will put years on your life.

Finally able to get out on a run this morning following injury, felt great. I'm sure this dry January lark helps!

Only 3 miles, and super slow because I just wanted to test my back out. Great to be back out though. Bring on the miles so I can get back to marathons :)

I have some under shirts called nike dri fit, they are pro combat compression (whatever that means) . So I thought that all dri fit was like this? I had to by xxl and xl just to get them over my weedy 38" chest.

Still plugging away, though running in the rain and cold isn't fun. If I do a 10k tomorrow as planned (my birthday. What a way to spend the evening....) I'll have exceeded my best ever month. I also walked around 30k over the weekend along the Northumbrian coast.

I've set myself a vague aim of running 1000km this year, which comes down to 20k per week with a 2 week holiday. Work travel can really eat into that though. I'm off to Texas on Thursday, but there's a route there I can run which looks pretty good.

Ran a 15k on Saturday, and a 10k last night. I managed a few runs in Texas, which means I'm already up to 45k for the month. Off to Dubai on Saturday morning. It's relatively cool there at the moment, so I may be able to run outside in the evenings - if not then I'll be on the treadmill instead.

Travelling is a pain. Heading west means I wake early, so can run first thing. Travelling east means I'm struggling to get up in the mornings, so will generally run in the evenings. That means watching what I eat at lunch. Wandering through a hotel lobby when you're dripping in sweat usually raises a few eyebrows. The worst is when you get to your room and find the key doesn't work, so you had back to reception and hang around with people staring at you.

Seems to work! Soaked 4 shirts in one large bottle of distilled white vinegar for an hour. Then washed at 30 degrees. Have had several 10k runs and so far only pleasant smells before and after washing.

Seem to have got over the hamstring ok. While in Dubai, I ran on treadmills twice. I thought I'd run outside, but although the heat wasn't too bad the humidity as really high. I ran a total of 124.7km in February, so I'm well ahead of my target of 1000km for the year.

Sunday I tried a long run, but really struggled to do 15km. Last night I did 10k, and it was no problem at all though the first few were hard going. Really need to get my diet sorted, and do some work between runs on strengthening my legs and core.

Both of those are a bit far from me. I'll probably do a few 10ks this year, and maybe step up to a half marathon if my training improves.

I didn't get a place in the 180k cycle I'd applied for, so it's running all the way this year. I've realised I can run to or from work, it's 15k along the canal path and back roads. I'd just need to work out how to get home/to work again.

Running, never something i have done, always played football, but never gone for a run.

I will probably start thought, any exercise is always good, just never tried running (it will be jogging in my case to be clear) I am only running if something is chasing me.

Step 1 for me will be run only 1km each day for 5 days in a row, then go from there

You need rest days, so don't try to run every day. Also, go for time rather than distance. The course I used started at a 1 minute run followed by a 1 minute walk, repeated 10 times. Rest the next day, then run for 2 minutes followed by a 4 minute walk. Repeat that a couple of times.

10 last night in 51 minutes 44 seconds. That's two minutes off my personal best.

Not sure of the logic, but my first run after a long run is always fast. I felt comfortable most of the way round, just a slight wobble at the top of the hill which caused me to walk a couple of paces.
