Cheapest way to advertise

I have just set up my own local advertising directory <Mod removed url> and need to advertise it. I have set up facebook and twitter accounts, how else can I advertise it for free (or very cheap). Please don't say 'you get what you pay for' as I am setting up this site with my own money (which is very limited).

There are quite a few business forums you can advertise on 4Networking being one.

Is this a small directory and you are looking for local businesses to advertise i it?

Laura, the problem is that you are doing what everybody else did 10 years ago. All the free marketing and advertising routes has long been saturated and you will struggle to gain even the tiniest foothold.

However, use you local newspapers, parish magazines, cards in newsagents windows, leaflets, flyers and a table in the town centre on a Saturday are all cheap ways to promote yourself locally.

But you are going to struggle. It could be years before you see any return on your investment.

Sorry to be so disheartening but that's the reality of things. Directories are a dying breed.

I don't think you understand the concept. My directory is for others to sell their own local advertising space e.g. if you have a car you can list it and sell (or trade) advertising space on the side of it or if you have a field on the side of the M6 you can sell advertising space on this.

I didn't want my website to be local, I wanted it to help others advertise their business locally. It cuts out the need for an advertising agency and makes the whole local advertising process cheaper and more transparent.

just created an account with 4networking, this is great thanks. I would like to get my website well established in my local area but eventually I would like it to be national.

Sounds like you have a niche platform - but promoting this will be hard - tough to gain traction now, as fisicx already pointed out, your 10 years too late, as the last of the good dirs started in early 2001, these just about got traction and are doing ok, but anyone new entering this space will struggle without a top notch idea, and some local dir idea has no exclusivity to give it an edge in the directory space and thats what you'd need to do.

Besides, you'll need the media to pick up the story, and they won't for a local directory idea. You might make some cash from it one day - but it will be sporadic at best and you won't be able to charge until its established and 'built up' with information/listings, which you'll have to give away for free for starters....

Doesnt look like you've got many results showing - if this is to work, you must get this fillled with at least 1000 companies! - (5000 would be good).

Users/searchers need something to search, you know.....
