OP, I'm not sure why you have been greeted with such negativity and hostility by some people here? :|

Typical valuation models are 3 x net profit for example.

If you have built up a powerful brand in the local marketplace and demonstrate consistent profitability, repeat or contracted business along with low fixed costs then there will be a market for your business.

Umm! That's not really correct. What is profit!?

Profit for one person could be a loss for another.

Is £15k a profit for a business where the owner takes no income? In my view that could be a loss of £ 15-30k when you put in a manager or want to pay yourself. As I mentioned in my earlier posts it will have different values for different people.

I would suggest that valuation models vary from sector to sector and that the OP should seek more advice from a business transfer agent (one of which has replied here).

so not the "3 times" typical example you posted then, glad you could join in and confuse matters further.

This 'business' makes me a reasonable living (about £100K a year profit) but it is not a business.

:eek::eek:
What planet do you live on? :D

A reasonable living is probably something between 15-20k. You earn about 25k less than the prime minister!

Congrats though on building up a business that makes such a large profit!!

I have tought of setting up such business for over a year because I understand a lot about cars and am very good at managing people. What stopped me however is the expense of having cars on the road that stupid snobs vomit in...

also I can make much more money by selling something than providing a service. you can never get rich by providing a service

Thanks mate,

I wasn't meaning to be patronising calling 100 K a year reasonable. My point was that although the 'business' makes me a tidy sum, as a business, its worth nothing.

Salary and profit are all relative anyway. I live in an expensive area, and at 34 years old, earning that sort of money is the only way to be able to buy here. There is not a single house on our road worth less than 500K, so needs must. I probably have less disposable income than someone on 50 grand a year who lives in a cheaper area.

Duncan Bannatyne states 3 x net profit, Bytestart suggests 5-10 times earnings, Daltons Business says "Business Transfer agents, Accountants and Chartered Surveyors can all provide you with business valuations".

Yes,because lots of snobs will be vomiting in your car on the way to meetings or airport drop offs :|

I was going to prove you horribly wrong by posting a few links to multi millionaires who'd disagree, but not worth wasting time on someone going to make such silly statements really.

show me 1 billionaire that became billionaire by providing a service... of course there will be millionaires, million pounds is nothing if you have been a banker or a solicitor for 30 years or whatever.

Warren Buffett is a multi-multi-billionaire through providing investment services to the shareholders of Berkshire Hathaway.

Does he count???

Warren Buffett provides investment services via an advisory investment fund. He has never created a product and is the third richest man in the world, whose net worth stands at $47 billion according to Forbes.

**** you shut my mouth this does not happen often

A percentage of it, yes. As does Charlie Munger. Both of whom provide investment services to the shareholders of Berkshire Hathaway. Both are billionaires.

ok but... only in the financial services you can make a billion no other type of service.

So a million pounds is "nothing", but to prove you wrong I need to find people who are worth 1000 times that to qualify?

You're a waste of bandwidth, why are you even posting here...

why are YOU posting here? I have run 3 businesses and am about to get another one going but never seen what business YOU run.

I would dispute that. I tried to place an order for £100,000 worth of your chocolate - there's no order form on your website, the mobile number doesnt work - oh, and Cadbury's are well annoyed with your Libel and you should be hearing from them soon.
No doubt you have a huge legal team and unlimited funds to fight them off.
But you lost £100,000 of my business.

I ended up going to Cadburys in the end

I'm joining the party a little late, but how is the OP trading, as a sole trader or as a limited company? If it is an LTD I'd be interested to know how he is planning to just 'keep' the Mercedes at no personal cost.

Interesting theory, so anyone who is effectively a '1 man band' doesn't run a business?

I'm sure their are plenty who would disagree.

I'm sure plenty of one man bands who think they have a very successful business would disagree :D but unfortunately when it comes to selling a business whether or not it could run with anyone else as an owner defines whether it is a business or not, otherwise the "owner" pretty much just has a job for his own company - a job which only he can do, he can't go on holiday because the business won't continue to run, he can't pass over the business because he is the only one who knows how to run it.

Don't get me wrong, a one man band can turn his business into a viable business that can be sold, it's just putting the motions in place.

I've always believed this and it was a theory my dad always taught me, however I was advised to read this book around a year ago - http://www.amazon.co.uk/myth-Revisited-Small-Businesses-About/dp/0887307280

And he definitely words it a lot better than me.

Do you have any experienced input? Or just an opinion from the book that duncan bannatyne told you you would be succesfull if you read

I can't believe people are actually arguing with D.W.P again

Wow what a professional businessman....swearing on your home page is a great way to show your character....if people think your an idiot they won't do business with you.

For a second there I thought you were talking to me :D

Don't worry, the majority of people already knew he was a joke - have a look through his previous posts if you fancy a laugh.

Everyone seems to be ignoring the thousands of Millionaires that set up their businesses online; for the majority part, providing a service.

I can think of one pretty familiar name instantly.

As for the business evaluation, well some pretty good points raised and it's hard to judge an estimation based on little facts. I doubt anyone here can give a good estimation. The main problem being; if they're gonna pay tens of thousands for yours, there's no reason why they can't start their own. And to some extent with a business like that, they're better off starting afresh.
