Will we soon be forced into squat toilets?

Now that Rochdale Shopping Centre has approved these toilets, how long will it be before any business, retail centre or offices has to provide these as well?

Years back disabled toilets were provided out of courtesy, now it is expected. It may not be too long before we are expected to provide these too.

The trouble with good-will gestures like this is that it becomes expected, then it becomes law. This will cost businesses a heck of a lot of money.

Reading the article.. am not sure whether the invasion of squat toilets is more worrying..or the fact that there is a "British Toilet Association"!!

btw, what happens to toilet paper?

Total and utter absolute nonsense! I bet you that most asians prefer the traditional british toilet anyway....
Cultural awareness my a***, are you telling me that the minority that do prefer squatting have one of these bowls in their houses?
Next thing you know they'll be demanding them in the council houses, costing tax payer even more.

On the flipside of things...with all the governement cutbacks going on...it might be the way forward for council housing..:D

Is this really a business topic?

No one demanded this... It's clearly been done for a bit of publicity.

I've got a very dodgy knee, the thought of it giving out mid "use" and falling in doesn't appeal - even more so if I'm following Massey's user - uuugh.

I hope this is a joke. I can only imagine what will happen when someone who has never used one of these tries to and falls over backwards, coming into contact with the rim which is probably covered in splashback of **** and piss.

Saw one of these in France and India, had to hold it till we got back to the hotel.

lost my favourite sunglasses in one of these in the French Alps a while ago ... insufficiently attached to my rugby shirt ..... have a prejudice against them ever since.
Why not go into our historic heritage and introduce Roman style ones ? - we could sit over a hole, as we do now, but not in a cubicle - all in a line in the same room. Not sure about the communal vinegar soaked sponge on a stick as a toilet paper substitue though.

It is a business topic as in the future, any business that provides toilets may also have to provide these facilities as they do disabled toilets so as not to discriminate.

Whether the daily mail have blown this up is irrelevant really, it is sensationalist but it is there that a business has "Approved" this. This does not mean he was forced into it, I do not believe for a minute it was but for something to be approved, it has to be requested.
This means then that there is a call for it. If there is a call for it and one twit gives in be it for publicity, because he is of the asian persuasion or because he is being kind, it has opened the door to that request being approved.
This was like shops years back, the bigger stores who made alterations to their stores to allow easy access for wheelchairs then paved the way to laws being in place as it was then accepted that wheelchair users would be discriminated against if they were denied easy access.
It simply paved the way and cost business a fortune.

Maybe they will install mini-showers to clean up with. They are actually pretty good though as long as you have toilet paper too.

Maybe I'm reading the article wrong (you know, from a normal non-mail reading persons perspective) but I don't recall that the centre was forced to install any kind of toilet.

Now, now, you've been on this forum long enough to know that facts aren't allowed to be brought up in these sorts of threads. :D

I did some work in Jordan and was confronted these bloody things every time I needed a visit - which was often, as hygiene was questionable over there...

Coming into another country and demanding things your own way is equivilant to refusing to take your shoes off in a nieghbours house, just because you don't bother in your own.

I mean, how hard is it for these guys to use a British bog?? The inescapable truth is that at some point, the struggling, Muslim toilet goer's family came over here to seek refuge, or a more comfortable life. You would imagine that they would be more focussed on arranging 'Alla bless the British' festivals to show their cultures thanks for our accomodation, than worrying about how to balance on a standard toilet.

There is also no denying that on a purely technical level, the British bog is clearly more advanced.

Another thought...

I would genuinly love to hear from any of the Muslims on here regards this story. I simply don't believe that the vast majority want this sort of BS publicity and gesture.

They dont need toilet paper.
Apparently a lot of Muslims carry a washable rag with them for the purpose of bum wiping!
If you leave yours at home though you may well have to borrow your friends?

At the risk of rocking the boat (HMS Xenophobia), just a few points:

- its not a "Muslim" bog. More people around the world use these toilets than use Western ones, that includes France, Japan, China, SE Asia, the Middle East, and the Indian & African continents. So that would make it a Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish, Taoist, Muslim and last but not least, a Christian bog :D.

- it may surprise you to learn that people from those countries feel just as disgusted when they look at a western toilet. Why would they want their backside to touch the seat that 50 other people's has touched? This is why you will sometimes see footprints facing forward on western toilets ... they stand and squat on the seat to avoid the filth of touching it.

- again, seems disgusting to westerners but often squatters use a bucket or jet of water rather than toilet roll, which leaves the body cleaner afterwards.

- many people from the west who spend an extended time in those countries eventually come to like these bogs more, even if they hate it at first. (a) once our stiff western hips get used to it, squatting is the most natural way to go (b) it feels cleaner

- the most intimidating toilets I've ever seen were in China, where they are often communal  !! That's right, blokes squatting around the same room dropping their load... no cubicles. So in comparison, the one in the OP's link is luxurious!

- As for missing the hole... be honest, we've all seen western toilets where it boggles the mind to understand how someone could be so wayward with their aim... and I'm talking onesies AND twosies! The chance of missing is no greater with squat bogs when people have been using them all their life.

There is a good compromise... the pedestal squat toilet... a western style bog with built in footplates for those wishing to go 'the other way'.

Good to see we live in a tolerant society

Maybe all well and good, but we are in the UK not any of the above. Do the Asian continents (for example) offer UK facilities to keep us happy (which is what many people find so unacceptable - our pandering to the minority in our own country when it's not reciprocated)?

According to my chiropractor, one of the greatest curses and causes of back problems (and farmers) is sit-down toilets.

Particularly when we read magazines on them.

Absolutely. If you visit parts of those countries that are frequented by westerners who will spend money there, you will often find western toilets. The more affluent the village/town/city, the more western toilets there are. Notably the non-westerners choose not to use them, just like we would choose not to use the ones in the OP's link, but the option is there for both. Its all about providing the varied public/customers with what they want. We are indeed in the UK, which I'm quite proud to believe is a multicultural society in deed not just in word.

Thanks, that put me right!! But I wouldn't describe Rochdale as affluent :p

Neither would I, and I can list hundreds of things the money would be better spent on in the area.

I'm not against the idea, the current toilets in Rochdale are absolutely disgusting, so the further you can keep your body away from them, the better in my eyes. Just seems like a waste of money which could be better spent elsewhere.

I believe Rochdale Exchange is privately owned, not paid for by taxes.

From what I can gather it is a private individual, the retail business owner who has approved of these toilets.

I think what is important is that when a gesture of goodwill is done like this, it then becomes expected and then when it becomes expected it is deemed as the norm. When it is deemed as the norm it becomes law.

This in turn will cost us all. There is another thread in regards to breastfeeding in the office. Remember the twin towers? The workers there had a creche and there employers were very flexible and family orientated. Now, years later, it may well become law in this country. This simply opens up the floodgates.

Remember the Twin Towers? The Twin Towers having a creche explains how the floodgates will open and we will all have to squat over a damnable johnny foreign toilet, which will be the end of civilisation as we know it?
Damned shame that. End of civilisation just to pander to Johnny Foreigner's funny bowel habits, and uppity women with jobs wanting to actually feed their bloody children.
Bit of a busted flush, eh? Everything down the pan?

Yeah, I can completely sympathise with small business owners who are put in difficult situations cos of 'diversity legislation'. The breast-feeding thing would probably make it difficult for some women to get a job. But I think we're a long way away from The Squat Lavvy Act 2015 ;)

I have a cat in my office this week. (I'm looking after it as a favour.)

By your logic, every business will end up being forced by law to have cats in the workplace.
