I keep hearing on the news that the snow is causing all sorts of disruption to UK business, what problems have people had in their organisations, how have you overcome the problems and did you have a plan in place to deal with adverse the weather?

I work from home which is handy but as the schools close when it snows, my kids are at home which makes working impossible. Fortunately I am flexible anyway so no deadlines have been missed as yet.

Yes we made a plan, carry on as normal clients on 2nd Jan :eek: Cold but happy. That said we have had a few cancellations mainly from southern softies:rolleyes:

We have had over 12 days of snow and -c temp but staff know the score and how to get to work, they know my plan is do not come with excuses make a plan, If only the clients did?

Local council have been a disgrace though with no bins collected for over 3 weeks now and no paths cleared of snow. Post that arrived today was postmarked 22 Dec

My plan is snow chains!

I'm fed up with either sliding into curb in my own road or being housebound so snow chains it is. Then at least I can drop kiddos at their pals and perhaps get some work done that way when schools are closed!

Meanwhile, we often had more than a foot of snow in the Midlands and it never stopped me going anywhere. It just took a long time to get anywhere.

I used to live in the Peak District and we often got some pretty heavy snow. Only one time did it make driving seriously difficult, their comes a point that snow is so wedged up in the middle of the road, and so slippery where it's been compacted, that getting wedged, stuck or slipping down one of Derbyshires many steep drops is inevitable.

But not one thing I have seen this year or last has come anything close to that. For sure cars slide all over the place but the laws of physics still apply. If you can't predict whats about to happen then you shouldn't be driving.

Snow chains? No way. I have a item stored in Aberdeen that I visit most winters. You wouldn't believe the state of their roads sometimes - but do you know how the taxi drives handle it?

They drift round the corners whilst listening to radio 2. Job done, no need for getting all dramatic.

I really don't get the huge problem so many people have in this country. Driving on the most slippary surface is no more impossible than walking on it. If you go slow and maintain momentum in the right direction it's possible. Are people basically complaining just because its a bit less convenient?

Got to agree ... we have snow every year and got to say that previous years its been deeper than this and yet the schools around here still open, life goes on and everyone just gets on with it.

Its a fact of life living in the hills that it snows and it will be icy and the roads will be slippy ... why only last week I had a wonderful time navigating the local ring road and its many roundabouts - just need a pair of ice skates, that or careful driving with no sharp turns and no severe braking.

Good for you! Up 't' north using snow chains is the quivilant of a bloke ordering a bacardi and diet coke at a bar. Some things just are not acceptable!

When I find a slippary road the first thing I do is lock the wheels up. The distance I slide determines my maximum safe speed for the rest of that road. Most 'safe' drivers probably don't think to do that.

Same here, just carry on as normal. I found people winding down for the holidays a much bigger problem in getting business than the weather, and I tend to work outside most of the day.

It's not that bad, minus 5 celcius this morning and it was 0 degrees most of the day, so it isn't really that cold. In fact, I think it might have got up to 1 degree or so for at least an hour or so.

Exactly. As far as I'm concerned the people that carry on as normal have a voice at least 10x louder than those who look out the window, see a rough frost, and immediatley ground normal day to day living.

Truth is though it's not the scardy cats at fault, its the government. If the met office are 60% + confident of freezing roads they HAVE to issue an extreme weather warning. So what on earth are they going to do next time we have a month long deep freeze and snow drifts covering half of peoples houses? Extra extreme? These people actually recommend no one travels each time roads freeze. But roads freeze often, life hasn't stopped for billions of years :|

Its certainly a case of over hyping mild fluctuations whilst risking the general public becoming blase' to the possibilty of real danger.

Speaking of which, this winter might just become a serious problem for large parts of the uk. I recommend people go back to using common sense and judge the situation for themselves. If your car is sideways by the time you leave your drive then its probably a bad idea to go to work. If not just go for it and practice your driving skills!!!!

sounds like you have a few Bacardi and cokes before you go our in your car.

In between following me round these forums and antagonising me do you ever actually do any work? (if not maybe start with that website of yours...).

For your information I have had only two car crashes, both involving being young and stupid. nonetheless both were stylish and exciting. The last one wowed my then girlfriend. It was worth the loss of my 91 reg Honda CRX and the other car looked even worse

I will allow for youth and human experimentaion. But I will not allow for wimpery and cowardice. Sometimes it snows, everyone needs to get over it!

Speaking of 4x4s on boxing day the father in law had to take a cat to the vet - except he got stuck leaving the estate in his BMW X5. Mostly due to the fact that the tyres are useless and far wider than such a relatively slow car would ever benefit from. Yet he was almost annoyed when my normal car drove straight out and got his cat to the vets on time :rolleyes:

If buying a 4x4, buy a decent one at least.

i was most annoyed the other day...heading on out i was..down to a nearby village, when i came across a hill that must of had around 6 or 7 inches of snow on it all day, i tootled past a renault clio..buried in a ditch it was...'ho ho what fun' i exclaimed, as i increased my speed, anticipating a large gradient ahead...

long story short..i had to slide down the hill backwards and go home, twas impossible to get up the darn thing, even the Troopers and Land Rovers were having to give it some welly to get to the top.

What I fail to understand is; if my entirely impractical, rear wheel drive, sporty looking car can manage in the snow, why can't the 4x4's that I'm driving past?

depends what type of 4X4s they are i s'pose...BMWs are reportedly bad in the snow, some of the fake 4x4s (imports from India/China) are next to useless...Range/Land Rovers should be able to handle it though, the big Nissans are also powering through the snow from what i've seen.

I drive an RX8; surely even a fake 4x4 should cope if that can?

The weakest link is the same in every car, the nut behind the wheel.

My Shogun has no problems in this sort of weather, it even tows a caravan in these conditions.

I watched a French video featuring a girlfriend of a carcrash, it will haunt me forever. I'll try and dig it out for you.

She survived the 'exciting crash' but her face was entirely melted off, she has no hands or feet and her entire body is scarred.

Then there was the crash slightly closer to home. My best friends brother (16) and sister (aged 21) died in an 'exciting crash'. The sisters head came right off in pieces and was hanging in the nearby trees. The boyfriend got out this exciting crash without a scratch.

Posts like this are pathetic.

Actually it will technically prevent all skids. The only problem is sometimes skidding is preferable to not stopping at all!

ABS won't stop your car on ice, because it won't allow any effective braking at all. No braking isn't a skid, its more rolling into an accident in slow motion ;)

Well I for one am a total coward when it comes to snow on the roads. Couple of years back it took me 2 hours to drive to my (then) work, when it should've taken 30 minutes. Got stuck in a queue on a steep hill, slid backwards, didn't have a clue what to do. Luckily nobody was behind me so I didn't crash into anyone. But I did sit at the steering wheel sobbing like a baby. By the time I arrived at the office, my legs were shaking so much I couldn't walk. Boss took one look at me and sent me home (another treacherous 2 hour drive). From that day on, the agreement was that if it snowed, I would work from home or take annual leave.

Coward? Yes :D But at least I'm alive, and not putting anyone else's life at risk by driving the "wrong" way when it snows. I've had a couple of minor crashes in the 17 years I've been driving, and those were traumatic enough - I certainly wouldn't want to go through that again, especially not in bad driving conditions.

Well I have just done a nice 100 mile round trip ... it started with a 'lets see if we can leave the village' to a 'lets see if we can get to the motorway' to a heck ... no snow!!

The further north you travel, the less snow there is.

The most scary part of it all ... following behind someone who insisted on doing 10mph for some 4 miles and have another mile of traffic behind them .... if you are that worried about being out on the road - surely its stay at home time. Sometimes driving too slow causes as many accidents as driving too fast!!

Errr, North of where? Cars going nowhere in our area (Bradford). Main roads clear but getting to them is a different matter. Three crashes on our road today due to white stuff.

Definitely agree with comment re worried about been out in snow and causing more trouble.

North of Lancashire - heading towards Kendal ... got to Preston on the M6 and there must have been about one inch if that ... whereas here, well lets just say I can drive so managed to get the car out of a rather deep drift!

I blame it on young drivers - hardly get snow in the UK so they have little experience of driving in it and crawling along at 5mph in a souped up Saxo doesnt sit easily;)
