I learned something today, I made an error and I am happy to share the knowledge in case anyone else goes down the same road as me. Feel free to laugh and point in my general direction.
In analytics I have been analysing customer trends before they purchase, a lot of people coming to the site with the search term chair bed end up buying a futon, searching for sofa bed and buying a futon, so people call the same basic product in different ways.
I set up 3 goals for these corresponding landing pages in Analytics.
Popped onto Adwords the next day and under 'reporting' tab it said 'hey look, you have new goals to import in from Analytics, click to verify and link to Adwords' so I said 'okey dokey Google, whatever you suggest'
Overnight the conversion rate rocketed to 22.2%
Adwords was telling me we had sold 48 futons in 24 hours ..... Analytics said 'nah you only sold 5' I raised this issue with my Adwords rep 2 days ago, who asked for the HTML code to the 'payment complete' site to check the code was installed correctly, I knew it was because no one had changed it. He didn't get back to me with a solution.
...... this has gone on for 3 days before I realised a goal linked to Analytics is essentially a conversion, and not a reflection of revenue.
I just called my rep back to say I had resolved it, and he thanked me because him and the IT team could not figure it out!
I still felt stupid anyway.
So, just to verify my stupidity .. who already knew this?
