Trying to work out what to charge for shipping when all the carriers have different rates. It would be great if you could set a dynamic rate, but as far as I know only Shopify stores in the US can do this.

Anyway, it got me wondering what sort of things were causing other people a headache this past week.

So, what really grinds your gears?

Yeah that's a perfectly good approach. But there is value for me and the customer in finding the most value for money shipping option.
All depends on what you and your customers consider value for money. If you have a product that is required in a timely manner say a car part for a broken down car you and your customer would consider the extra you pay for a premium carrier beneficial. The value of the part might not be much but the consequence for not arriving on time could be.

Yeah I totally agree with that. But to continue the example of an auto parts shop. A car part would be worth paying more for a premium carrier, but if you're just stocking up on fuzzy dice then it would make sense to look for the cheapest.

This raises an interesting question. Can I set my carrier based on the item purchased? I'll have to look into that.

Any decent e-commerce system will let you offer alternatives and let the customer choose, based on price.

I only enable Royal Mail, never had requests for other services.

    People moaning about shipping costs
    That's a bugger to me :)
I'm sure you would considering you are a carrier. But consider the car part vs fuzzy dice example above.

It just doesn't make sense to pay for primo shipping when a budget option will be just as suitable and more appealing to the customer in terms of shipping cost.

If it's an expensive piece or needs to be delivered quickly then sure, paying more makes sense.

A lot of the systems out there can predetermine the carrier based on the predefined parameters you set. Wether it be certain SKU / value / box size ect.

Wow, Shopify really can't do something as basic as that?

    You can?

You can have multiple different shipping profiles defined by different rules. IE we have products which are custom built so we have a profile which is called "not next day" and we set they automatically fall into this category based on certain spec.

You can also set product by weight, dimensions etc and have them fall into different profiles.
