Yell advertising

Is it worth it? They are offering a "premuim" space on the website (so a bolder advert with bullet points & a seperate about me page) for £250 for 12 months.

It's pay monthly too which would suit me, but is it a good choice?

A friend of mine advertised in Yell and all he gets is calls from other companies and websites asking him to advertise with them.... I have never used the service myself.

You would get a better crack at the ROI if you upgraded your signature here.

Seriously, yell smell!

I've used the free submission over the past few months and haven't had one call from anyone but sales people

Ask your Yell rep for testimonials as it works great for some types of business and less well for others. If it works well for your business, they will have LOTS of evidence to back it up including stats and testimonials from other customers. Contact one of these customers and double check if its still working now (if it's an old testimonial)

Yell make a big point of collecting such testimonials and even incentivise sales people to do this, so if they decline sending you testimonials, there's a good reason!...

The bloke said on the phone that last week they had 80 searches on the site for "web designer" in "town name". But anyone could make it up on the the spot

ask Yell to give you a 3 month trial. The monthly cost is dearer than if it was part of a 12 month contract but it does tell you whether it works or not. Doing this any other way is guesswork....

Will have a word about that, cheers.

I don't mind testing a service as it's only for a set period and can cancel it

actually thinking about it, its a rolling monthly contract you take up which effectively allows you to trial it so you can cancel after one month but make sure you are aware of the notice period or you'll be paying month 2 as well. Mind you, one month isnt really long enough to test it..

I will let it run for 2/3 months and see what results I get from it, only then can i get a good estimate of the return

Hi (this is my first post)

Id just like to say that i have owned my printing company in Bromley for over 16 years and in the past i have advertised on yell's website and in their printed directory.

I always recieved a few enquires (over the space of the year), but probably only ever broke even.

Last summer, when my contract was up with yell i started advertising instead with a LOCAL independant online directory. They are a fairly new company themselves, but i can honestly say that i have had more enquiries from being on that LOCAL site in 6 months than i ever had from 2 or 3 years with yells website AND its only £50 for the year!

Id advice that you forget yell and look for your own LOCAL independant directory in your town.

Make sure you always ask EVERY new customer where they heard about you - or you will never know what works for you!

I have not worked with a single client who has got anything out of advertising on Yell.com. Some have paid upwards of £500.00 to get nothing. I would seriously recommend against it.

I am not sure where they get the number of searches each month from - however I had one client who was told that they received 300, 220 and 321 hits for her business type over the ast three months. She took out a premium advert and over eight months got ONE Yell.com generated call. There were only eight companies in Yell advertising her type of service..

I belive that they used to offer 2 months advertising for free up front but stopped doing this because of the hassle they had with people wanting to pull out at the end of this period.
