Is there any value in writing a press release for a new webiste and submitting it to various press release submission sites or am I more than likely just wasting my time as the backlinks are worthless these days?

If you can find a newsworthy angle there is no harm in sending a press release to your local papers though. Maybe see if they want a feature on ways to comply with water permeability regs or something.

Yes I am planning on sending press releases to the local papers. Was just wondering if it was worth doing something online as well but wasnt sure if it would be worth it for us.

We are offering free CAD driveway design at the moment and was considering sending press releases to the local papers regarding this offer but not sure how well this will do as its a little bit too much of an advert. But, perhaps offering to do a feature on permeable paving or driveway planning permission or something along those lines could be a better way to attack it. Thanks for advice

As you say, you need to make sure its newsworthy. There are always things in your industry that make good press releases, and local papers love them. You just need to be a bit clever about it.

Obviously , as OWG says, if you are purely going for backlinks, it wont hurt to submit your releases online. Personally, i tend to prioritise use of time on things that are more likely to actually generate work.:)

I see your point on focussing on actually getting the work but I'm determined to have the website in a good place on google come next March so every little that can help in that respect then its worth investing the time to get it done.

Ive got a few ideas to try and get in the local papers now so ill give that a shot as well.

Thanks to you both for advice, I appreciate it

Try to speak to someone at the local paper to find out when they are going to have a home or garden improvement section. This will increase your chance of publication. If you make your release informational they may include a link to your site for further info on their website. Another trusted backlink to add the the pot.

You could consider submitting a local version of your press release to the local paper and adding a more generic one to your website (unless your online audience is strictly local too?). Just make sure that your press releases are regular web pages and not Word documents or PDFs as that would compromise the SEO value.

Adding press releases and other news-related stuff to a website on a regular basis is very important - both to justify your 'news'/'press' category and to keep those search bots crawling your site. Don't forget including your keywords and relevant linking.

Would it be worth paying to have the press release distributed even for a local business?

If you have some news that you think might be considered topical and breaking news then yes. If I was you I'd play the "improve not move" card and release a press release along these lines http://www.prweb.com/releases/today-in-america-improve/not-move/prweb9546633.htm

You'll notice that this has been released just today and so you releasing a PRWeb press release as soon as possible might have an effect like piggy-backing on this existing news. It's like they've set the scene, wet everyone's appetite and so on.

Thanks very much for that, its definitely got me thinking. Ive got some pretty good data on the possible property value increases that a well landscaped garden can bring.

So what kind of websites pick up stories from these press release submission sites? Do some of the bigger news sites such the BBC get news stories from these kinds of press releases or do you need to contact the bigger boys direct?

There's a change of the big boys picking it up, it's sent to journalists in their network with a higher priced packages. The major online news sites might pick it up and The Financial Times, Times, Guardian and Daily Telegraph. Typically once one uses your story the others also tend to. But not all press release sites are equal.

Always and I repeat always add a video to your press release or at least have one on your landing page/s because it engages more visitors.

Press releases are something you should do on a regular basis though and always follow them up with some backlink building especially social bookmarking, articles for further reading around the subject, RSS mashups and so on. Milk it to extract as much value as possible basically.

Hi Selc Ltd

With a bit of thought and knowledge of the media industry, there's no reason why you would not perhaps be able to secure national, as well as regional, press coverage for your business.

But, yes, good idea to approach regionals first. But it must be a news story, and not an advert.

If you know any journalists, PR people, talk it through with them.

Good luck,
