I think its important to do something that you love and enjoy... Personally I wouldn't get out of bed to just make a wage if I were unhappy and bored with the job.
You need to spend your time looking for something you're passionate about and would enjoy doing!!!

I agree. But others probably are not passionate about what they're doing and still appear to be quite happy. I guess many in finance over recent years, given the size of the industry now, appear to be this way given the rewards open to them that might out-way the less than exciting nature of banking.

I agree. It sounds like your in a nice position whereby you have a bit of breathing space to weigh up your options and learn/try something new too.
Plenty of money to be made online (in both retail and service) so if you have time on your hands and the shop is quiet you could be doing this without shutting up shop.
I would usually advise thinking about the things outside of work that interest you, a business around something you generally are interested in will often help give you the drive to stick at it.

I'll be honest the 2nd "business" is simply dog walking and was done as an "experiment" to give Mrs Banned something to do. It can't really be expanded as I don't want to employ staff on it and the wife is fully booked every day. Did consider doing some walking myself - still might - as we are turning away new clients on a daily basis.
Online sales are minimal for the shop and not worth pursuing.

What about doggy day care business? I don't mean house sitting, I mean 10-20-30 dogs in a purpose built unit.
I looked at buying a bit of land and setting it up. When I realized I would actually need to put time in and/or have relevant qualifications for insurance I thought better of it. Maybe your wife already has those qualifications and experience though?

Actually that is something we are considering, we have the land available but we don't particularly like dogs in cages/runs. Just looking at the alternatives together with licences, planing etc.

Read the opening post again, I made it clear it wasn't a sympathy, self-indulgent thread, but a question as to what other people would do in my situation. I thought I made it clear (everyone else seems to have grasped the facts!) that I consider myself in the fortunate position of taking enough in the shop to provide a reasonable wage and having the luxury of "getting out" at the end of every month if I wish. The issue is to survive the downturn I spent the last year or so making the changes to ensure the shop rides out recession, which it can easily do now. That however means me being here every day. That's where I coming unstuck - do I want to spend, what I predict will be, the next two years in a quiet shop going slowly insane, get out or run something else alongside? Hence why I asked others what they would. Firstly out if interest, secondly to maybe get some inspiration.
Violins not required thank's because I'm actually in the ideal situation for a independent B&M retailer at the moment.

Well I take issue with that and find it just a little harsh. You have shown yourself to know absolutely nothing about me or my shop - which thankfully I put down to being anonymous. It's simply untrue that I have an open/closed sign, the opening hours are displayed on the door instead.

There is on near me that do it as "doggy day creche". The dogs are all kept together, and "play" all day - tiring them out. This also means they get away worth charging a lot more (£20 or £25 a dog per day I think). Hence me not having the time/qualifications to run it and also to assess that the dogs are suitable to "play" with other dogs.

Why not shut up shop and get yourself an on-line shop? Overheads will be much lower and you have no need to be tied to a particular location until you need to do your daily shipping. With an on-line shop you can easily manage it while you are out - maybe just walking the dog - on say an iPad or iPhone or similar.
