would you pay for referrals

With the winter just a round the corner

I need referrals and fast

I have never paid for referrals before, but i feel its a growing trend as more and more people are joining networking groups and keeping referrals in the group

I myself have now joined BNI so i have see the evidence for the past 3 visits

one person gave a referral for £ 4000.00

i think i would pay around 5% of the total cost of the first sale but no including further sales

what are your thoughts on this

and maybe we can all make a bit extra

Adrian

Adrian, it seems that you dont understand networking yet or the concept of givers gain within your BNI chapter.

The guy that gave the £4,000 referral doesnt want your 5% he wants you to find him £4,000 of business.

I would never pay for referrals within a networking environment, my payment is trying to find business for the person referring business to me.

Giving someone a drink for putting a bit of work your way, is common practice, I certainly believe in it and regularly buy people drinks. I expect and ask for a drink if I put work someone's way.

I work on a referrals basis with a couple of partners - I drop my hourly rate for them, and they charge their clients at my normal hourly rate.

And yes, a 'drink' is also a nice gesture if someone has put a bit of work my way but doesn't want to bill the client themselves :)

I give people work all the time, especially one plumber i dont take any cash off him but the next time we struggle he comes and works for free we just sort of mix in together in a networking sort of way.

Where it is worth paying for referals is customers that refer you to other people. Or giving the referer a discount on future services they require.
