Would like to start a business...

I have been working in the IT industry as a programmer for the last 10 years.
I would really like to start a business of my own - ideally in the IT industry - but this appears to be fully saturated now.

Does anyone have any ideas where I should look?
Anyone know anyone who has been in a similar situation?

I saw a post earlier here where someone (can't remember who, sorry) said no market is completely saturated.

You just need to take a step back and have a good look. You dont need a new idea, just a better way to do someone elses idea.

Hi Op

First of all Kris, I am not following you around, hehe. Anyway back to the op. If you are a programmer and you are looking to start something, can you frop me a line as I have an idea that you and I could develop.

Drop me a pm with your email address and I will email you the idea. It would be down to you if you wanted to run with it.

Good luck

Process driven software is always a big seller. Government departments, banks, the big companies all want this - especially a good reliable reporting suite (where the back end tables actually tally up!) which has flexibility of user interaction and bespoke reporting (select random fields etc to generate charts). All that sort of stuff is big money.

There will also always be niche software needed - something that services a particular function for a particular work stream.

Anyway - best wishes with it. If you need a video to promote something you've done, then give us a shout.

Does anyone else know of any business ideas suitable for ex-it people to explore?

Not necessarily looking to stay in the software business.
Keen to hear if anyone knows anyone who has been in a similar situation?

I tell you what I want. A decent UK based company that can project manage large scale IT projects. We recently had to hire an Indian firm to overhaul one of our procurement systems (I'm talking multi-million pound contract). We couldn't find a UK based company that could draw together all the necessary recourses for this ad-hoc project.

Here you go LeasingEval, you already have a few UKBF members here who could do with your programming skills, and it is a good start.
So the safest (and lowest-risk) way to start your own business now is to keep your day job while working on your entrepreneurial venture at night and on weekends, on a freelance basis. You can start thinking about quitting when your new venture is bringing in a regular income.
Come to think of it, I have a project in the pipeline that needs a programmer. Please keep in touch, and wish you all the best.
