Why does my laptop suddenly keeps crashing?

Yesterday my laptop suddenly started crashing and I get the blue screen and the top message saying shut down windows to prevent damage to my computer. Said something about removing any recently installed hardware or software but the only thing i've downloaded to install since last week is AVG if that's any clue.

This kept happening repeatedly on rebooting. Sometimes Id get as far as logging back into windows and within seconds it would crash again. Sometimes it lasted longer. After a few hours it stopped happening and was okay rest of the day. Then it happened again today, roughly about the same time too, though this time happened less often.

Any ideas what it could be?

Don't know if it is software or whether it's what I think it may be, the processor, happend to me where it came loose so opened laptop up shoved a 2p underneath it closed it up and works fine

My Old laptop used to do the same thing, I took it aprt (or rather my partner did) put it together again and it seemed fine for a while. Was a processor fault on mine too.

BSOD is usually down to hardware - bad drivers or incorrect drivers.
Have u unistalled avg and rebooted and re-tested.
Also...go into the event log's for 'system' and see if there are any fatal errors (red icon)

yes ive got some of those red errors in a list somewhere. didnt mean much to me though. I will try unstall and reinstall avg though, if its likely to be that. Theres nothing else been installed for a few weeks.

 

Have you tried a restore to a date before AVG was installed.?

dont know if its that yet J, im not about to take it apart - will wait until a proper IT person can look at it, if it continues. Was hoping it was something easily identified and rectified by myself.

No. Yesterday I restored to an hour before and I seem to think it worked ok after that (though cant fully remember as it did it so mnay times! Today I restoted to midnite last nite and that didnt work.

 

Is it the BSOD that you are actually getting here (or some other message)?

ie.

If it is this, and you can actually get into your machine sometimes, my advice would be to get everything off there you will need - as you are only a matter of time away from a serious crash.

Unfortunately without getting hands on the PC, it is difficult to determine what exactly is causing it, it could be hardware-related as stated, or your machine might just have a corruption in the OS, needing a fresh install of windows, etc.

Either way, if you can get access - get anything important off there.

Don't be too hasty to do a fresh install yourself, as most times the data can easily be got back from the PC - simply a case of sticking your HDD into a cradle and accessing it that way.

I would suggest a fresh install of XP (I am assuming it is XP) first, but if it persists after this, then you have a component heading towards failure.

ok if it doesn't work try and get the error msg in the system log , namely the event ID and category

Just as a matter of interest have you had Norton on the machine,this piece of crap software should never have seen the light of day.

I will try look for the error info again.

Dont recall seeing BSOD on this blue screen.

I back up via carbonite so all data is safe. Ive got stuff like Norton Ghost and GoBack on here for what its worth.

One more thing, other day on here I saw a post by Telemax. Someone had recomended him so I clicked on his sig url out of curiosity. It went through to what looked like a web directory not a website for telemarketing services. But anyway that aside, as AVG was running it scan day after that, it flashed up virus threat via that very same url of telemax. Is there any way that could have been the problem? Thats the only issue thats happened this week.

actually Earl, you could be right! I had Norton Security software lurking and wondered if it could be that not mixing well with AVG so after it recovered this aft, I removed Norton Security (which actually hasnt expired but I hear it causes so many problems, so thought Id switch to AVG for now). Is it likely it could be that instead?
