Who are your ancestors?

Since there have been so few messages posted to Time Out.... ;)

Over the holiday period, I decided to sign up for a month's membership at the biggest ancestry website. Years ago, while working in central London, I dropped by various record offices and did quite a bit of family history research. Almost all my ancestors are from Cornwall and have Cornish names, so it was quite easy to get back to the 1600s - but no earlier. I kept hoping to come across someone like "Cromwell - Oliver", but no such luck. They were mostly farm labourers. The only interesting thing was that the spelling of last names would change often since they couldn't read or write and simply dictated their names to a clerk.

Well, signing up for this online service, I was able to confirm all the work I did then. There were very few additional links; however, I was able to find the parents of one ancestor from the 1700s. Tracing that line, I went back and back and back...and almost fell off my chair. I'm directly descended from the kings of all six Celtic countries (Cornwall, Wales, Brittany, Man, Ireland, and Scotland) - and a majority of the ancient kings of Cornwall, Wales, and Brittany. Among the more well-known Celts are Dafydd Gam ap Llywelyn (through two separate lines), Hywel Dda, Cunedda ap Ederyn, the various kings Hoel of Brittany, and the wife of the king of Cornwall who, according to legend, was effectively raped by Arthur Pendragon. Since the earliest Celtic tribal leaders inter-married with fleeing Roman rulers of Britain, I'm also descended from at least seven Roman emperors. One Roman son was married off to an Iceni princess, so I'm also directly descended from Boadicea. Wow - what an eye-opener. Of course, my first thought was that users of the system have fabricated links to famous people; however, I went back and verified the facts (as much as possible) at various historical websites, and it checks out. No Oliver Cromwell, though.

So, who are among your ancestors?

According to the Priory of Sion, I am descended from Jesus.

I tell whoever will listen when I get the chance :D so thank you very much for asking.
It sounds very strange if I just bring it up in conversation.

I've always been interested in looking up my Ancestory, the fact I have an American surname and a Hankering for Fast Food (Could be my age that one ;) ) must mean I'm descended from Abraham Lincoln or Ronald McDonald.

What are the best websites for this?

Oh I think the question should be rather than who are - who would you like to be your ancestors ....

For instance Prince Charles is apparently related to Vlad the Impaler - perhaps he is trying to beef up his image from the plant talker he is ....

Although why don't we have names for people like this anymore - you have William the Conqueror, Buffalo Bill, The Desert Fox, The Red Baron etc - whatever happened to good nicknames for people ....

Steve I think that's fascinating :)

I started on my tree and was astounded at how easy some things are with census records and iPad apps

My hubby is a plasterer and we traced a whole line of plasterers on his side even though he had no idea of this beforehand!

I've had to have a bit of a break from it as I was starting to get addicted to it! But I'll go back to it soon as I didn't get anywhere near as far back as you :)

This is an excellent article. Given the rapid impact of multiplying each generation by 2, you do soon end up with millions of ancestors. The key to exciting discoveries, it seems, is establishing the record trail. Another factor, in my case, is that the Celts, while inter-marrying with other Celtic nations, tended to remain rather isolated. Indeed, a recent article in the Telegraph mentioned how the Welsh and Cornish are genetically the 'purest' of Britons because of this relative isolation. Most of the early leaders, though, interbred with fleeing Romans - at which point they rejoin the principal gene pool.

Despite all the mathematics that show we're all descended from royalty, even discovering the obvious can be exciting when you can put together a complete and validated record trail to Roman emperors and the like - especially when the journey takes you through most of the kings of six Celtic nations.
