When is "made in Britain" true?

Hi

I have been trying to decide what percentage of the manufacturing process needs to be carried out in the UK before "Made in Britain" can be legitimately claimed.

It think that there are virtually no products (especially anything that contains electronics) that are 100% manufactured in the UK.

I am just thinking about a new product that will a PCB that will be assembled in China but the enclosure manufacture, full assembly and software writing will all be done in the UK.

I am interested in peoples opinion of what construes "Made in Britain".

§29.Sir Bernard Braineasked the Secretary of State for Trade whether he is satisfied with the definition of "Made in Britain" under the Trade Descriptions Act; and if not, what alterations are being considered.

§Mrs. Sally OppenheimThe country of origin of goods is deemed for the purposes of the Trade Descriptions Acts 1968 and 1972 to be that in which they last underwent a treatment or process resulting in a substantial change. I am not proposing any amendments to that general origin determination provision. But, should there be a doubt as to whether a treatment or process does or does not result in a substantial change, my right hon. Friend does have powers to clarify the position by an order under section 36(2) of the 1968 Act.
