Anyone know whats happening - lines are down, as is their site?

'We are experiencing some technical problems but hope to be back very shortly. Sorry for the inconvenience.'

I like the honest messages.

"We are currently experiencing some technical problems but we will be back very shortly. Sorry for the inconvenience."

Wouldn't that be annoying if that was like that all day?

Sites up, no calls still!

All was ok until about 90 mins, when we stopped receiving calls - which was strange and drew my attention to a possible issue!

Sorry chaps - we've got a serious problem with the network.

I don't yet know what the problem is - all the people that do are all working on it. If this goes on any longer I'll have to pull one of them off and provide an update.

You'll find messages on our user forum.

It looks like we've lost a Domain Name Server. We have 2 but for some reason - which is beyond me at the moment - it's caused other problems. We're installing a replacement now. Keep your fingers crossed, mine are all eaten.

Looks like it's fixed. I'll try to post an explanation when the smoke has cleared

We're beginning to understand what happened. We lost our primary DNS (ns1) which shouldn't have mattered as our secondary DNS (ns2) should simply have taken over the work. But it only partly managed this for some fairly complicated technical reason involving our need for reverse DNS look-ups.

We managed to recover ns1 and everything was brought back to normal. However we've learnt something and will be making some changes to our network which will ensure full failover if this sort of thing happens again. We will also add a 3rd DNS (ns3) as a belts and braces excercise.

This is extreemly frustrating as since March 2007 we have only had 3 minutes of downtime - luckily this occurred outside business hours so very few people were affected.

    Sorry :-(
