Hi, I currently have an ebay shop selling fishing tackle, but im getting a bit fed up of the spiraling fees they charge and now they even have adverts on the side of the screen that come up when your searching for goods which actually divert you away from ebay! bad business if you ask me!

So im now looking to set up a decent ecommerce site to sell my goods on, I don't really know much about them to be honest, so im just seeing if anyone has any to reccommend to me, thanks, Russell.

I run a digital agency, but won't put myself forward as some colleagues have done, here. (This is my first post on UKBF and it would be remiss.)

I would say shop around, get a feel for what a £1000 budget gets you, what a £6000 budget gets you, and what a few pounds a month will deliver...

It's not all about 'how cheap' - it's about ultimate value. eBay can deliver you thousands of potential customers immediately, albeit at a price (which you have discovered) - but your own site will sit alone in the dark for a while unless you invest (seriously) in SEO, or put a budget towards a PPC/Adwords campaign.

Speak to 4 or 5 agencies (ideally local to you, if you're not experienced in this arena)... it's always best to see the whites of their eyes.

Yes i understand there will be a cost, but to be honest I would rather pay google than ebay, I would also advertise on forums and I have a big facebook following so hopefully this would work to an extent, it seems like a minefield out there, so many companies offering their services.

Hi There Russell,

Happy to help you out with this; as you say the costs can spiral.

May be good if we got you some quotes from some local e-commerce website designers so that you can meet with them (also, if they have an understanding of your market this could also help).

Where abouts are you based?

Regards,

Hi Russel. I just put this in another post of the forum that I've been to a few Ecommerce / B2B portals recently and the one that I liked was WorldofTrade.com. It definitely does not have the side adverts that you talked about albeit it may be a bit cluttered and the font size of the text is a bit small and hence seems squashed. But the categories of Industries are very noticeable as well as the Sellers and Buyers catalogues and it is very easy to register as well. It seems to be organised as much as I have gone through. You may try this one out :) Hope this is of some use

Hi Russel,

As you can see from the thread, there are a lot of shopping carts, online shops and / or bespoke solutions to choose from.

You might want to take into consideration your technical expertise and support.

You can take a look at our guide to getting started in e-commerce. It takes you step by step thorugh the whole set-up process, including some important issues, which may seem tricky at first.

Hope it proves useful and please do feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.

Good luck.

Eva

Don't forget to go into PayPal and download an excel file of ALL your transactions/sales.

You've then got an email marketing list to use. If you're any good at Excel, you can produce a report to show which email address ordered how many times and the total spend. If you don't know how to do this, I'd be happy to show you/do it for you.

I did it some years ago and offered people the same product they'd bought from me before at a slight discount for avoiding eBay. As they'd already bought from me in the past and were pleased, there was no issue on trusting me and quite a few sales came from it. I even had someone reply to my email about 2 years later asking if I still had any stock !

Although he should bear in mind that this is unsolicited email and illegal. Emails collected in this way would not even qualify for soft opt-in, as the customer has not been given the opportunity to opt out.

I thought if you'd kept in touch with customers it wasn't classed as unsolicite, or maybe I'm thinking of financial services.

They have to opt in to your mailing list. Or if they buy something from you they can be added but have to be given the opportunity to opt out at the time of the sale.

Ah, never mind then. But maybe something to think about doing from now on so that all future ebay customers can become you future non-ebay customers and save you some fees.

I don't think it's actually possible on eBay as they don't offer opt out. Not saying it doesn't happen, but it does carry risk.

Rather than PM you like others have done - here's the deal - why dont you PM me, let me know your budget is and I'll provide you with a solution that fits.

By the way just having an eCommerce enabled website is only about 1/5 of the battle you have if you want to start making you money.

Wow, flood gates are open, hope your inbox has not exploded! :)

Magento and virtuemart are two popular e-commerce frameworks we have experience with. Google these and find about more them so you are in the picture when and if you do talk to a developer.
If you have a good technical head you can install and use these yourself, but you can actually save yourself money by having someone else who is experienced do it for you, because it will be done so much faster by an expert, and time is money.

Well thanks for the great response, certainly a lot of fishing for business going on, to be honest im looking for recommendations from members rather than companies offering their services, however they are very much appreciated and I will definately be looking into some of the offers I have been pm'd, although it would be handy to have a recommendation from anyone on this site that has used some of the services I have been offered,
Great response though, many thanks

Hi Russell

I am in testing phase of my new web site which is due for launch next month. It is a classified ads web site which is totally free of charge (no hidden costs!) also completely free of advertising on the site. It is a community based site which means you can join/set up a fishing community and sell your gear to the people you know it will be of interest to. I will keep you posted!:)
thanks, sounds very interesting

!!!! DO NOT TOUCH WITH YOUR LIFE OR BUSINESS !!!!

One of the most untrustworthy and unethical companies I have ever had to look in to!

The amount of complaints from Merchant accounts that I see is amazing, not only from Business owners but also internal employee's. It seems that they like to sign merchants up as quickly as possible just to increase profit margins! They have no empathy for customers after the signing date what so ever!

From what I also understand they have around 7-10k customers and only 4 customer service representatives? This would of course explain the amount of disgruntled messages I receive that their customer service is NON existent! They do not care once you have signed into the 3 year agreement and will of course just simply penalise you with ridiculous fee's for cancellation.

I am also told that they are able to sign accounts over the telephone? Do not send any proof of Identification i.e; Passports, Driving licenses, Business Documents!? I do not understand how these are signed off as proof of you as a person and also your business, as you will never have met face to face. The documents are signed by someone you have never met and passed through for application? This is completely ILLEGAL!!! DO NOT SEND ANYTHING !!!!

To repeat, all of this Information has been sent to me in numerous emails, not only from existing customers but also those that are unhappy with the service but most surprisingly Internal employee's.

!!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED !!!

Perhaps also check out Drupal/Ubercart and Prestashop - I have experience in using these and for the price, they are great if you are looking for something for free. However, you will need to be a bit of a techie to set them up - especially ubercart. However, if you express an interest I am sure you will be inundated with offers of help on this forum... :)

I dont know if i am allowed to post a link but i know a guy www.epicflowers.com He does websites for florists which have to have fairly complex back offices so a simple flyer would be a strait forward affair for him His name is Brandon. Very good rates.
