Agree, the brain is the best bit of software to use. All the software does is focus you into specific areas when a holistic approach is more effective.

I disagree in general here, I think SEO software and page evaluations can give you a very detailed and quick overview of a page and identify problems that you may overlook. I too really favour the holistic approach and think that you can easily focus so much on one aspect and overlook another apect.
The SEO software that automatically submits you to the very valuable search engines is probably not worth the time it takes to set it up but have had clients produce these lists from previous SEO companies when they have moved to us after the previous SEO campaign ending in tears. They are of progaganda value only, to easily impressed business owners.

I used to use seoelite and keyword elite but now I do such jobs mainly manually plus some add-ons on Firefox like seoquake.

Just downloaded seoquake you say 'like' giving the impression there are other addons for firefox. Am i not unleashing the potential of firefox is there something i am missing?

SEO quake, SEO Elite and the many others are not SEO tools. All they do is report back what is already known. Analysing your competitors is worthless as you can never be sure what element was key to their ranking nor can you be sure they convert on those keywords for which they rank highly.
Much better to do your own thing. Work on your own niche and develop a site thet converts well in that niche.
@GreenLaser. There are no freebies that have any value. You are already in a niche so could easily be dominating the search results. All you need to do is read the search engines guideline and follow basic marketing principles.

Google Adwords tool is a good site keyword research

But what no software packed can tell you is where to put those keywords on the page. For that, you either need to be prepared to research on-page optimisation yourself or pay somebody else to do it for you.

And has it worked? Have you used their suggestions and seen your ranking improve? I've had a look at the demo and it is very focussed on specific keywords which may not be the ones that actually make you money.

Why?
How do you know which of their ranking pages convert? How do you know which element on the their pages has the greatest effect on the their ranking? How do you know which inbound links boost the ranking? How do you know which pages have the highest convertion rate or if the calls to action work?
Copying your competitors just means there are now two sites competing in exactly the same niche.
Much better to concentrate on making you YOUR site effective than worrying about the features on THEIR site.
Note, my comments are about comparing two sites side by side not an analysis of the business models.

I agree with the first 3 or 4 repllies, you don't need software to get good SEO results, you need a good bunch of people who spend a lot of time online!
Ideally a developer to do the on-page work and a PR consultant or social media addict to do the backlinking...

Firstly I never said you should "copy" a competitor but you can get lots of interesting bits on information from how a competitor markets their own site. Saying it's worthless is crazy! For example you can very easily tell which sites are receptive to link requests/guest post ect and of those which a having the biggest ranking effect (you need to use your brain for the last bit)

Yes I agree but that's an analysis of their business model. SEO software won't give you this information which was the point of my 'worthless' comment. Should have made that clearer.

In all honesty, would any SEO proffessional ever recommend a software? it would dilute their claim to be the unbeatable experts in this murky area

It depends. I use Market Samurai a lot because when I'm talking to a client I can get an indication of the difficulty of a particular term very quickly. All it's doing is querying Google anyway, just faster, and my time is valuable. Obviously you need to add intelligence and experience, but I use it all the same.
Does that make me less of an 'expert'?
