This is answered by attempting to follow the information you've been given. RSS is a private company set-up in 1974 to study the microwave data gathered by NASA. Hence, the results start from 1975, probably because we didn't have much sensing equipment on sats before that date.



Yes, it would probably show that we periods of hot and cold. That doesn't take away the fact that the data shows an increase in the speed of change later in the thrend. (But this little nugget would be masked by asking for a larger dataset)

You mean the proxy readings which were no doubt compared to the surface temps? And the sat readings, which are compared to the surface temps?

It wouldn't matter if you recalibrated, it wouldn't result in any better data.

Sorry, I am talking to someone who has no idea about data interpretation an analysis, that is clear from the point where you say error bars do not matter. They do matter and a lot. An error bar, for example you are given a measurement that says temperature is 20+-2 means that you do not know whether the actual temperature is 18,19,20,21 or 22 or any number in between and you need to take that into account for any interpretation. As far as the data given there we do not have any information on those errors for that each data point.
As cjd points out, I do not work as a scientist now but I used to, 4 years before my PhD, more than 10 after, and I know a lot about it, more than about the stock market.
And that goes along the lines of choosing the function. If you want to know how certain quantity behaves as a function of another variable, this time Time, you may want to get a smooth function to represent the change, hopefully that function can be reproduce by a Theory or a model. The choice of fitting the data with a straight line is done sometimes because is the simplest thing to do, nothing else. But scientist some time expend a lot of time trying to guess what is the best function (and I assure you there are a lot of analytical --the ones you can handle with pen and paper) to fit the data. Some times it is crucial to the result of the research. An example:
When Galilei did his famous experiment and measured the time it would take for an object to fall from different heights it could have choose to fit the data with a straight line, which he did because was the theory that preceeded his. But the whole point of his contribution tu science, that wasn't small, was to observe that a far better fitt was obtained using a quadratic function, and better than with what ever other function. Therefore, he concluded that those objects were acelerated constantly.
I certainly do not see where you can see the acelertion of the increase where in fact what an be clearly seen is a decrease from around 1998.
An what I can not see at all how can anyone clame that the change in temperature is due to human activity from that graph.

Thought you'd say that... :rolleyes: So many experts in this field that I'm surprised we have any disagreements on this subject.

The data is available, do it yourself, I'm sure when other scientists look at your work, they will say why have they done this, why did't they do that... Much the same as you did. Its the reason Climate Change is such a big debate.

Granted, I don't care as much about analyzing the raw numbers as you do, I'm happy to let the scientists do that, and to weight up all the information I can gather from their results, so I'll accept others are much better positioned to do this job. (Which is why I'm on a business forum, and not in a university :rolleyes:)

So, why are so many scientists pointing towards climate change? That's the question... Co2 (man-made or not) seems to be something we are hung-up on because we don't like the idea of change, or anyone telling us what to do. I'm not certain Co2 is the cause ever, yet I can see from studies that regardless of the atmosphere, emissions have a huge effect on our planet. We need to manage this, something we haven't even thought of doing so far.

Much of the talk against "Climate Change man-made Co2" appears to position people against all change in favour of helping our enviroment... I understand the debate has been polarised, and taken advantage of by governments and business, but we can't allow that to cloud the clear message this data reveals.

Things are changing, and I'd like to be prepared for those changes, I don't want my grandchildren living with the consequences of our inaction.

    I wish you'd read the thread rather than just the bits you feel like.

    The point of my graph post was in answer to sirearl - I was explaining that you can't tell from a bunch of raw data whether there's a trend in it and giving him that chart as an example of how you start to see one.

    I had no other interest in it than that; I'm not showing it as any kind of proof of anything. But as you bring it up - it rather suggests that warming has happened since at least the 70s doesn't it? As measured by satellite or from land (despite Steve's earlier assertion).

    (I know all about regression analysis - thanks - I do it every month; there's even an r squared function in Excel - it aint rocket science. I'd love to see the r squared of a horizontal line thru that data - tosh. The full paper will no doubt have the relevant information for you if you're that interested.)

    You claim to be a scientist. Why don't you re-read this thread and make a note of the times that I've said that a consensus is not proof and where I've said that I too am sceptical and asked for anyone to show how the warming we are seeing now (which I assume is not too contentious) can be separated from the other periods of natural warming/cooling that we know the earth has already seen and then how we can be so certain it is man made.

    The consensus came from somewhere and as it's a highly unattractive finding on any measure; economic, political, human - it didn't happen easily

    Sorry if I make mistakes interpreting some posts. We are in page 33 of this threat and I read all of it from the beginning, but certainly I can not remember every thing that everyone said.

    Now the question of the consensus. This "consensus" is a media/political creation the only proof of truth in science is facts, empirical facts, no other thing. As for the warming part is concerned, humanity will see during the next decades whether there is an abnormal warming or not, so far we know that the recent data from the last few years are not in agreement with the model predictions that foretasted a catastrophic climate change.
    What is more astonishing form my point of view is the fact that the issue of how much human activity an affect the climate can be easily clarified with todays technology and resources and those studies, if they exist, have not been given the publicity that they would deserve. Imagine that the comparison with the variation of temperature in Mars and Venus would show that the behaviour of the Earth temperature wasn't consistent with those changes, wouldn't be a strong argument, a nice little graph, to be put forward on any news channel as proof that the climate change is caused by us? So far, the only argument I heard was that they couldn't think of another reason, really? being the activity of the Sun the most obvious.
    Even if the activity of the Sun could bu ruled out as the cause of warming, there are other naturally occurring phenomenae that could have an influence on global temperature, that could also be ruled out or ruled in. For instance, variation on the strength of the Earth Magnetic field, which has been reported to have weakened during the nineties. The magnetic field creates a kind of a shield around the Earth that deflects some of the radiation that strikes the earth mainly from the Sun. A weakening of the magnetic field, which is constantly changing, and is a natural system of which we know very little, would encrease the amount of radiation that reaches the Atmosphere and the surface of the earth contributing to higher temperatues. But this can also be substracted out of the data, or added in if instead of weakening it was strengthening.
    My issues with the whole theory is that I don't buy into it. I am a Physicist, although I wasn't working on Earth Sciences, but I tought at university many subjects on Physics, among them statistical Physics, and to my knowledge, this argument that the CO2 reaches the upper parts of the atmosphere and stays there for many dacates flys on the face of all text books on statistical mechanics. As intiution also tell us, when you have a misture of gases and you leave it to settle, the gases are ordered acording to their molecular mases, heaviest lower, lightest higher, that is why in the utter most parts of the atmosphere you only find hidrogen, because is the lightest gas there is. Also you find a thin ozone layer but that is because the ozone is in a kind of plasma state in which you actuly have molecules of O2 an free O ions recombining to make O3 in a kind or inestable states. Then, CO2 is heavier than air (about 70% nitrogen nearly 30% osigen). Fair enough that winds can push the CO2 up, but with less strength than the same winds will push the rest of the air, and it will fall faster.
    All the green house effect theory of CO2, which I read, is a very tyni third order or lower corection. As is normally presented to the public, looks like radiation comes into the atmosphere and then can not leave (well par of it, I am trying to summarize), and that is what couses the warming. This is nonsense. CO2 is the same and has the same properties which eve way you look a it, so if it prevents radiation from leaving, also prevents radiation form entering. What they are talking here is about the radiatino emited by the earth due to the temperature it already have, the spectrum of the black body radiation if you want to check it, after all the Earth is a hot body, has a hot inner, and that effect is tiny. The temperature of the earth on the surphace due to the heat inside, compare to the contribution of the Sun is neglegeable, you only need to go to Island in the long winter night to check o it.
    More so if we take into account the orders of magnitude a stake here. Some time ago, having a discussion like this I took the time to check the number. The proportion of CO2 in the Earth atmosfere is a litle under 0.5% is you measure it in weight and a little over 0.5% if you measure it in volume. The total human contribution to this concentration estimated in the Kyoto protocol is a small fraction of 1% of that 0.5%. I am not an especialist in the field, but I could bet my porn video collection that fluctiations of 1% on the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere occur naturally without the need of our intervention.
    Another point that Steve raised is the question would global warming be bad necesarily? I supose that that dependes on the temperature reached, but I am with him in the oppinion that the threat of a new ice age is someting we should thread more. The last Ice Age set in very rapidly, within decades, and the result was that as far as Birminham, more or less, the Earth was covered with a miles thik ice sheet. And that would really be a scary thought.
    But, as things go, if the temperature start dropping, be prepared for the phenomenon to be blamed on human activity, because it happened already. A lower profile scare mongering took place in the sixties and early seventings blaming the drop in temperture back then on the burning of fosil fuels.

    Yes, that is a good website given the fact that there are too many repetitions on TV lately. You could not find a more humorous piece of birds droppings. For instance:
    "Natural climate change in the past proves that climate is sensitive to an energy imbalance. If the planet accumulates heat, global temperatures will go up. Currently, CO2 is imposing an energy imbalance due to the enhanced greenhouse effect. Past climate change actually provides evidence for our climate's sensitivity to CO2."

    What the f**ck is that energy imbalance?. This guy has never studied physic, if he did he must have failed the most basic exams anyway. Heat by itself doesn't, necessarily increase the temperature. There are many situations in which this can happen and does happen, for instance, when volume also increases in a certain way. Just to put an example.

    The first point is the best one:
    "Solar activity has shown little to no long term trend since the 1950's. Consequently, any correlation between sun and climate ended in the 1970's when the modern global warming trend began."

    So, according to this genius, the activity of the Sun has remained constant since 1970, wow!, it doesn't remain constant within one day. Doesn't anyone remember the warnings about Sun flares? Quite the opposite, and a quick search on the Internet will reveal the fact of the ever changing solar activity.
    But it is a good point to bring up though. There is a more realistic threat coming from the Sun, and can strike us any time with only 25 min warning more or less. That is why, being a real, threat the sun is constantly being monitored and there is an alarm system in place for it. If there is a strong solar flare, with the wrong polarization (you do not now what that is just google it) it could actually burn the whole electric power infrastructure of the counties caught in daylight when it hapens, which would take many decades to rebuild and bring the countries in question back one century. It is an unlikely event, but it can actually hapen. If it does, and it is obseved with enough time in advance, the power grid needs to be shut down, for a while, an hour or so.

    As for the rest, what can I say, I leave it for when I am bored. As someone else already said here, that some one puts up a page doesn't make him less of an idiot.

    Also, another philosophical thought, while is very unlikely that life will disappear from the Earth, as if has been found that microorganism live in the most extreme conditions imaginable, human existence is constantly under threat, and there is no warranty whatsoever that humans will still exist in one months time: meteorite strike, huge volcano eruption, a sudden change in the Earths magnetic field, a new virus pandemic which we will be unable to treat, and so many others. Who ever seeks assurances is wasting his or her time, and most likely somebody else's. So, do not leave for tomorrow what you can enjoy today.

    In many respects you're right, but it's not so much fun when the government plans to ruin the economy and kill small business with draconian measures to combat what could be a non-existent problem. What's happening in the US right now is that skepticism is beginning to kick in, and public opinion is the only way to stop this nonsense. I've read some polling results that indicate the same is happening in Britain, but I have much less confidence that our public opinion counts for much these days.

    Actually, I hadn't heard of David Bellamy's demise until recently. What a shame. He is so passionate about real environmental issues and most certainly inspired many young people to consider more the implications of our actions on the planet. What a travesty that he was pushed out of the limelight because he doesn't agree with AGW.

    Global warming can be related with business, as different chemical industries discrete gases which are damaging ozone layer, throwing their waste direct in streams, this is distroing our nature and polluting our environment, they should be educated about whole situation and its harmful results

    This graph has changed since you first posted it. What does the black line mean? It certainly doesn't mean real temperature measurements as we have seen in the previous graph. If you want to show us different plots, please post one at the time and don't mess around.
    Another thing, is a this plot means nothing as, any student would be thought, plots should be self explanatory, so, there should be a legend to explain what every color represent.
    This is the all well known hokey stick graph with the "model" prediction until 2004, and that is the problem, because the data (the plot you showed before) do no t agree with the black line, "the computerized guess", there are reasons to believe that global warming is not happening the way we were told it would happen.

    Here you have a nice little plot, again with the problem that doesn't say what each line represent, but we can guess that at least one of them represent measures/estimates, and you can see how much warmer than today the Earth was 7000 years ago, when humans lived happily ever after (today)

    O yes, I have nothing to do but just following a dozen or more links to find out what the data comes from just because the author of the graph didn't want to put the information on the plot.

    As for your question of whether anyone doubts that warming is happening, is not a question of believing. If you have a look at the plot that I just showed, that spans 12,000 years, you can see that, in the long term, climate is cooling. The same as before, the plot doesn't state clearly what the different colours mean, but we can guess that they refer to the different techniques used to estimate the temperature and the black line represent an average that would reduce uncertainty.

    From 8,000 years ago to 3,000 years ago, the climate on the Earth was clearly warmer. In that time, the the Sumerian and the Egyptian civilization ware created along with the famous pyramids, a time of plenty in many respects. Humans didn't certainly banish from the face of the Earth. Round about the time of Chist the temperature were about the same as today. If anything, what we can see in the plot is a trend (since people like to draw straight lines across the data), we can see that the Earth temperature has been decreasing since 8,000 years ago till today, we are still far from the know maximum whatever set of data (colour) you chose to give credit to. So, if I had to place a bet based on that chart, it would be safer to bet that in the next 500 years, the Earth is cooling, may be approaching a new ice age, and what we have observed in the short term is a fluctiontion similar to so many other fluctuations tha you can see ploted on the chart.
    A good thing about this plot is that represent, clearly, over all the range of time, consistent measurments. It is not good to take proxy measures, say from tree rings, untill one point in time, and from them on use, for instance, satelite measure and asume that they are the same thing and therefore can be compared.

    Why do I find this interesting? Several reasons:

    1) This comes from a very pro-global warming website. Their other graphic show temperatures rising over the last 20 years (with data that seems quite inconsistent with other sources).

    2) The long-term pattern of the earth's warming and cooling is very evident. Clearly, we have more to fear from cooling than from warming right now.

    3) No one ever comments on the scale (forget the error on the x-axis). Compared with the annual fluctuation of temperatures (i.e., summer temperatures versus winter temperatures), the changes over thousands of years are surprisingly small. Note how the authors chose '0' on the y-axis to make it appear like we're now at an exception condition. Yes, we are near the top of a cycle, but why not make '0' the average temperature over the measured time period?

    4) What isn't pointed out, but other scientists have confirmed, is that the levels of carbon dioxide follow the changes in the temperature, not the other way around. As with any patterns in science, it's crucially important to determine which are the independent and the dependent variables.

    Interesting that an oil company is so 'green'? (And that you didn't mention it)

    I also note that the graph shows CO2 following temperature when temperature is falling but preceeding it when temperature is rising.

    Now, like you, I have no idea why that is so, but I bet there's a jolly good reason don't you?

    You will also note from the graph that the current CO2 levels are massively outside anything that has happened in the last half million years and if temperature does follow CO2 levels - as it has in each of the previous 4 peaks - then we're all going to fry our arses off.

    So as well as being "crucially important to determine which are the independent and the dependent variables" it's also important to look closely at the bloody information that the data is showing you.

    Reminds me of when I was fighting to get across that mobile phones can vastly increase the risk of brain tumors.

    So many experts giving opinions who were paid by mobile phone companies.

    I don't doubt that global warming exists from recent figures,but whether this is a natural occuring thing or man made is the question.

    I think if one took the whole volume of the earth's atmosphere and divided it by the volume of the pollutants ,one may get a better idea.Don't know if this has been done but could not find anything like it.?

    No need to worry because researchers have analyzed data in detail (and didn't simply draw a conclusion based on a casual reference to an approximate graph. Here's a relevant research paper, and let me quote from it:

    We confirm the close correlation between CO2 and Vostok temperature during deglaciations...To closely examine their phase relationship ,we searched for the best fit between those two properties...The best correlation was obtained when we shifted the CO2 profile by 800 (+/- 100) years. Combining this uncertainty with the uncertainty introduced by ice accumulation, we obtain an overall uncertainty of +/- 200 years, indicating that the increase in CO2 lags Antarctic warming by 800 +/- 200 years...This confirms that CO2 is not the forcing that initially drives the climatic system during a deglaciation. Rather, deglaciation is probably initiated by some insolation forcing, which influences first the temperature change in Antarctica and then the CO2.

    Personally, I think having the 0 of the Y-axis as it is shown (i.e. set to today's temperature) makes things look worse, in both cases.

    Also, I seem to remember reading that CO2 always follows temperature, but that CO2 is never the trigger for swings in heating up or cooling down. However, with more CO2 around, it will act as an amplifier for any small increase in temperature due to other causes like sun activity, and begin a positive feednback cycle of rapidly increasing temperatures. (That is what I read as the science, and it seems to be widely accepted. Not sure what it means today in terms of implications, as we've never had CO2 levels like this before and I'm not a climate scientist).

    It's an interesting graph and I'd read more about it if the web site referenced it - but it doesn't.

    I note that the website is SEED - SEED is Shchlumberger Excellence in Educational Development. And who is Schlumberger?

    I also note that the graph shows CO2 following temperature when temperature is falling but preceeding it when temperature is rising.

    Now, like you, I have no idea why that is so, but I bet there's a jolly good reason don't you?

    You will also note from the graph that the current CO2 levels are massively outside anything that has happened in the last half million years and if temperature does follow CO2 levels - as it has in each of the previous 4 peaks - then we're all going to fry our arses off.

    So as well as being "crucially important to determine which are the independent and the dependent variables" it's also important to look closely at the bloody information that the data is showing you.

    As you can see we have another element in play, the dust in the atmosphere due, mainly, to volcanic activity,m which in the present time is particularly low, letting in more sun light and contributing to higher temperatures.
    There are arguments in support of what Steve says, that CO2 follows temperature rather than the other way around. As temperatures drop, the statistical mechanics law that I mentioned in another post that makes the gases in a mixtures to order themselves according to their masses, also depends on the temperature of the gas, the higher the temperature the lower the ordering and vice versa. So, at lower temperatures, the CO2 tends to concentrate even more in the lower parts of the atmosphere, favoring that it would get dissolved in the water more readily. Also, in during the ice ages, the see levels where much lower, during the last one, people could walk from Britain to the continent, and therefore, CO2 had more room to go even lower in the atmosphere, so if we read concentration on samples taken at todays atmospheric levels will give a much lower reading for the CO2 concentration on air.
    Mind you that the oceans hold huge amounts of CO2, dissolved at very deep levels. At one point the atmosphere on Earth was CO2 reach, and actually live started under this conditions, and it was fortunate that live creatures could adapt to a poisonous gas, like O2 to survive, and we are here thanks to it.
    Also, to support this point of view, you can also see on the plot that there is a lag in the CO2 concentration and the temperature: CO2 rises or decreases a little later than temperatures. This lag is not apparent, at least on this plot, for the dust.

    No need to worry because researchers have analyzed data in detail (and didn't simply draw a conclusion based on a casual reference to an approximate graph. Here's a relevant research paper, and let me quote from it:

    We're looking at a graph that shows a very direct correlation of temperature with CO2, so regardless of whether C02 is causative or merely a signpost, it looks like we're going to fry.

    But we also know that C02 is a greenhouse gas, so it would appear to be a reasonable layman's guess that C02 actually does have some causation.

    ClimateGate looks as if it might soon explode. This commentary is from "The Intellectual Activist". The author is commenting on the leaked emails:

    In response to an article challenging global warming that was published in the journal Climate Research, CRU head Phil Jones complains that the journal needs to "rid themselves of this troublesome editor" - hopefully not through the same means used by Henry II's knights. Michael Mann replies: I think we have to stop considering "Climate Research" as a legitimate peer-reviewed journal. Perhaps we should encourage our colleagues in the climate research community to no longer submit to, or cite papers in, this journal. Note the circular logic employed here. Skepticism about global warming is wrong because it is not supported by scientific articles in "legitimate peer-reviewed journals." But if a journal actually publishes such an article, then it is by definition not "legitimate."

    You can also see from these e-mails the scientists' panic at any dissent appearing in the scientific literature. When another article by a skeptic was published in Geophysical Research Letters, Michael Mann complains, "It's one thing to lose Climate Research. We can't afford to lose GRL." Another CRU scientist, Tom Wigley, suggests that they target another troublesome editor: "If you think that Saiers is in the greenhouse skeptics camp, then, if we can find documentary evidence of this, we could go through official AGU channels to get him ousted." That's exactly what they did, and a later e-mail boasts that "The GRL leak may have been plugged up now w/new editorial leadership there."

    Not content to block out all dissent from scientific journals, the CRU scientists also conspired to secure friendly reviewers who could be counted on to rubber-stamp their own work. Phil Jones suggests such a list to Kevin Trenberth, with the assurance that "All of them know the sorts of things to say...without any prompting."

    So it's no surprise when another e-mail refers to an attempt to keep inconvenient scientific findings out of a UN report: "I can't see either of these papers being in the next IPCC report. K and I will keep them out somehow-even if we have to redefine what the peer-review literature is!" Think of all of this the next time you hear someone invoke the authority of peer review-or of the UN's IPCC reports-as backing for claims about global warming.

    This scandal goes beyond scientific journals and into other media used to promote the global warming dogma. For example, RealClimate.org has been billed as an objective website at which global warming activists and skeptics can engage in an impartial debate. But in the CRU e-mails, the global warming establishment boasts that RealClimate is in their pocket. I wanted you guys to know that you're free to use RC in any way you think would be helpful. Gavin and I are going to be careful about what comments we screen through....We can hold comments up in the queue and contact you about whether or not you think they should be screened through or not, and if so, any comments you'd like us to include. [T]hink of RC as a resource that is at your disposal....We'll use our best discretion to make sure the skeptics don't get to use the RC comments as a megaphone.

    And anyone doubting that the mainstream media is in on it, too, should check out New York Times reporter Andrew Revkin's toadying apologia for the CRU e-mails, masquerading as a news report.

    The picture that emerges is simple. In any discussion of global warming, either in the scientific literature or in the mainstream media, the outcome is always predetermined. Just as the temperature graphs produced by the CRU are always tricked out to show an upward-sloping "hockey stick," every discussion of global warming has to show that it is occurring and that humans are responsible. And any data or any scientific paper that tends to disprove that conclusion is smeared as "unscientific" precisely because it threatens the established dogma.

    For more than a decade, we've been told that there is a scientific "consensus" that humans are causing global warming, that "the debate is over" and all "legitimate" scientists acknowledge the truth of global warming. Now we know what this "consensus" really means. What it means is: the fix is in.

    There's not convincing you, is there? :) You ask for real data and real research work and unbiased authors, but then "you don't believe any of that".

    It's a temporary 'I don't believe it' as I can't read pdfs atm - I'm in tech hell - but even so, it's exceedingly unlikely that they have data that fine of 500,000 years and the CO2 problem.

    It is as much likely to have date from 500,00 years ago, than to have then from 100 years ago. For the simple reason that they come from the same source: ice. They drill in the ice caps, till certain depth so they know what age the ice was form. So, if you do not want to believe the data corresponding to 500K years ago, why believe data corresponding to 100 years ago?
    But Steve is quite right, there is no point on discussing with a fundamentalist believer. Regardless of what whether we come up with the conditions set up by yourself or not, you just do not want to believe what ever goes against your faith.
    Just a final word, to believe that humans can affect the evolution of the climate of the Earth atmosphere at a geological scale is a mental disease, akin to a megalomaniac's delusion. The orders of magnitude involved are way to big for us to have any impact.

    The CRU is fun and it's made national news, but given the amount of data they nicked, they've really got sod all on them at the moment. I wonder if that's the best they can do or whether there's some really good stuff to come.

    Oh, I don't know. They have already uncovered some quite serious stuff:

    1) Fiddling the data to cover up a lack of evidence for warming
    2) Getting someone fired from their job because they welcomed other opinions
    3) Undermining the peer review process by appointing rubber-stamp editors
    4) Destroying information when the government began an enquiry
    5) Hiding behind data protection laws to avoid reviews and to hide conflicting data

    If this was a private company, they'd already be facing a lawsuit. As it is, the mainstream media is trying to minimize the seriousness of these actions and the US government is hurriedly pushing out new reports to bolster AGW claims before Copenhagen.

    New revelations are coming to light daily as more people wade through the emails. I wouldn't be surprised to see other disturbing facts come to light. Even if they don't, though, the officials perpetrating these deceptions and cover-ups ought to be brought to account.

    Ah, I get it! When you aren't able to read a report, you don't just admit it but instead deny the unseen report's conclusions - twice. ;) The data looks credible to me because it's based on ice samples from Antartica that has been checked and double-checked and correlated against other data.

    No, no. I'm happy with the data. It shows that warming and C02 levels occur simultaneously. So we know that they are linked, CO2 is either causal (or partly causal) or an indicator of warming. Either way we're fkuced.

    As far as whether CO2 precedes or follows, it's clear from the graphs that it precedes or is coincident with temp rise and lags a fall. With that kind of data, I'd be happy to take the error margin of 200 years.

    No idea whether whether we can do anything about it of course.

    Back to the tactics of the AGW ideologues: When you run out of arguments, try to ridicule. I thought contributors to this thread were beginning to get serious.

    My main proiblem is that there is no such thing as an unbiased opinion these days.

    Everyone is chasing funding / grants / cash / status etc. which makes it impossible to know who to believe.

    As for computer moddeling - tell me this.
    How can a computer model predict weather patterns in 10, 20, 50, 100 years time taking into account all of the billions of variables - but can't predict the winner of a horse race which has only a few dozen variables?

    The answer - because they rely on assumption, yet present their findings as fact.

    This is what I have a problem with.

    Having spent three years producing computer models for my PhD research, I can assure you that weather forecasters (who always hogged government computers) can't even predict tomorrow's weather with certainty, let alone what will happen in a year's time or 100 years' time.
