Website providers

I currently have a website made with MS Office Live. Its simple for a non computer person like me and it cost me nothing apart from the domain name. As much as anything, I use it as an online brochure to show potential customers examples of my work. It is due for renewal shortly so now is the time to see if I can get a better website for minimal cost. I am a sole trader selling a service, not looking for an e commerce site and not looking for enquiries from miles away. Anyone got any pointers please?

Research, find what your competitors are doing and what your prospective clients are looking for in search engines...

You could build it yourself and learn as you go along, you will learn a lot of new things, but ultimately make a few mistakes as well
Hire a developer to build you a site, it will work from the go, not much learning from you and you can sit back and deal with any clients.

It all depends on your budget and whether you want to get your hands dirty, the DIY approach can be fun, but is it right for you and your business? Only you will know

Is it possible for you to PM over a link to your current site? By the sounds of it you are merely looking for a small bochure site that can be manually updated either by a developer or yourself?

If you wanted to update the site yourself, there are plenty of free solutions out there which will allow you to do that. Most of the time, these solutions are built for the non techy user who wants to get their presence online.

In any event, if you can send me some further information I would be more than willing to help where I can.

Hi! I have used a company called Smartdecat who offer a package starting at £40.00 which includes free hosting for the first year. It is a very versatile package and can be adapted to your own requirements. You would need to enter the content yourself (or they could do it for a fee) but you can then update it whenever you need to without paying someone else to do the work. Their customer support is fantastic (and so is the system they sell). Hope this helps and good luck with your research.

I can gladly help you out, if you want to PM me with your current site, spec and budget then I can do my best to accomodate what you are after. And always leave out the jargon and help you to understand the best possible all this techy stuff.

wordpress is ideal for this kind of non transactional content site..

very easy to install (most shared hosts have an auto installer so its as easy as can be)

you will need to go for linux shared hosting which luckily is the cheapest kind of hosting there is..

you could do the entire site yourself if you are prepared to mess about with it, or you will find it very easy to find someone who can give you a quick hand to get it up and running.

Untrue, php & mysql can run on windows server. CSnewmedia servers host php on their windows servers (and asp can run on linux servers)

I agree that if you can learn a little then Wordpress can be a great website builder. You can do it yourself, there are hundreds of (free) themes to choose from and all kinds of additional plug ins.

If you choose to pay someone to design the website for you then do a lot of research with regards to hosting as well as website design, SEO services available etc. Decide what is most important at this point in time for your business and focus on that.

The best of luck,

Susan

oh come on, you are recommending windows hosting for PHP and MySQL?

yes it will run, will it run as well - no

LAMP

WIMP

the acronym says it all ;)

I wasn't recommending it, and if I had the choice, I would use linux every day, but you can run php on a windows server. I was responding to your comment "you will need to go for linux hosting" as you don't.....You have a choice.

Linux is the prefereed choice, but what if the person already has a windows server :p

alright smarty pants :)

if you already have windows hosting and it supports PHP and MySQL and you are happy to use this for hosting PHP based sites instead of Linux then you can use that otherwise:

you will need to go for linux shared hosting which luckily is the cheapest kind of hosting there is..

even if I had windows hosting I would still get Linux hosting for PHP / MySQL

Hi Richard,

I'd be happy to give you a quote for the design and build of a new website, based on the information which you currently have - giving it a refresh.... or if you want something new.

If you'd be interested in getting in touch please PM me :)

linux = ease of use & quite fast
windows = death of internet / sorry i mean hard to work with & can be slower than linux - also much more prone to hacking

- in terms of platforms to use if its just a blog/info site use wordpress its nice and easy to use and get to grips with
- if you want e-commerce start with something like zencart and then move on to something else like magento - or build your own ;)
