so what is causing autism to increase exponentially? could it be a vaccine given at birth?

Could be much better diagnosis of autism - think most people have heard of autism now.
You are trying to find something that is changing and giving a cause for that change.
You could just as easily say that autism is caused by disposable nappies - more of them are used now than in 1970.
