Using Facebook to market a business

Has anyone here tried using one of the online networking sites to market their business? I've been reading up on it quite a bit lately and keep reading about the increasing numbers of people who are using it as a business tool.

I've put my Wrexham Today website online, and have also created some groups. I can't add any links yet so please cut and paste the URLs below. If any of you are already on Facebook I'd appreciate you joining me as a 'friend' to help me get it going and about hearing what you think of Facebook as a marketing tool.

I've also been dabbling with MySpace but I prefer the layout of Facebook and there seem to be more local businesses on there.

If there are any experienced Facebookers out there I would appreciate any advice on getting this going!:)

Hi Jane, yes facebook is good fun and also a helpful marketing tool. There are all sorts of good and wonderful networking groups on the place, even got a UKBF group on there.

I just tried searching for you on the place but search facility aint working at the moment, so I can't go ask you to become a friend.

Have you posted up your group on your local marketplace, as its a local thing? Also join other groups related to it and post on their boards etc, much as you would do on here. Also send out messages to all the friends you have on the place, go search the groups and get people to become friends with you etc. Its all about spreading your network across what you feel is relevant groups.

Hi Gill - thanks for your reply - it would be great to have you as a friend! I'm still very new to this - will try and find the marketplace and do as you suggest. I found UKBF on there and have joined up, will have to start posting some messages and 'networking' more as you say.

As well as the local groups I started the Entrepreneur UK group because there is a similar one in the US that is really popular, but nothing like it for the UK. Anyone out there who joins and helps get it going will be very welcome!

If you want a comprehensive approach to face book strategy - it is worth either enrolling on the

Immediate edge programme (dan raine ed dale) which also is also a good guide on how to do SEO using web 2 resources and long tail sites.
( a couple of members of this forume are there)...you can enrol for one month, and download the 10 part facebook marketing strategy!! and since it is on a month money back guarantee! - shhh!!! I didnt say that.

Or ( not sure if it is still open) but Stompernet ( a membership site of most of the worlds top internet marketers) has just released the SMARTS programme on social network marketing starting now - you can watch the "going natural 2 videos" for free - not related but fascinating for all that on stomperblog.

Finally...look out in may/june for a new network called GOT2ACCESS - when google is your parnter, and yahoo offers you $250m a year before the doors are even open - you had better believe it will be big - woth getting in early.

Good tip about the marketplace - never knew that function existed. Thank you.

I find changing your profile photo, every now and then helps. It works for me when I am ready to sell the next issue of my magazine.

Thanks for all the advice. I'm finding it all quite addictive - there is obviously huge potential for marketing businesses online in this way.

Yep I have both Dan Raine and Ed Dale listed as friends and I am still getting stuff from them re the 30DC. Makes for excellent reading on a wet day! ;)

Be grateful for an update Jane the whole thing leaves me cold and OK I'll admit I'm stupid but I just don't get web 2.0... so I would be very grateful for anyone who can actually give me stats as to why I should be more proactive within the sphere.

It depends on whether web 2.0 will help you attract your target audience really...

I'm using Facebook social ads at the mo to reach very closely targeted individuals who fit my customer profile. By clicking my social ad they either are sent to my home page or my Fan Page :D

You set up a page for your business and people who are your friends and others become fans,so that they receive updates and threads when you place information on your page, thus effectively adding them to your perhaps existing email marketing list in that they accept to receive update etc from you by implication!

I am on Facebook, though I'm like Norman-No-Mates.

I have tried all the usual, joining groups, etc - but just cannot see the benefit. All I see are people sending jokes and mad bolt-on zombie sh1t to each other.

Will keep trying though - as I have been told it can be useful.......

It's also very useful that people in your 'friends' list that have similar interests may find an interesting group or information and that is automatically sent to you. For example Gillie has just just joined the BusinessZone Facebook Group and I've had a look and found some really useful information there so have joined up too.

Ray - become a Fan of Arabella Miller
(I know you are anyway, got my very cool bizz cards and postcards this very morning!)
Click on the "Become a fan" line top right of the page to join. :)

You can then see what I do with the group over the next few weeks - I'm due to do something today - then you can see how it works for me and what happens when you are a fan - if I get enough fans then I will be able to start looking at the demographics etc - don't have enough yet to see this added extra!

(anyone else, please do join - I'll return the favour for you and you can get an idea about how it all works in return!)

BOHO - just going to become a fan of yours!

I recently setup the MaXimumbreak Snooker Facebook page and it's going pretty well although I do think it is fairly limited in terms of the content that you can place within it, unless you can develop your own applications.

Has anyone got any tips or tricks they've used to expand their content. I think it's a shame that fans can't submit pictures or videos - although I contacted facebook and they reckon this facility will soon be available.

The targeted ads are working quite well. I've setup 10 different mini-campaigns and can monitor them much in the same was as google or yahoo PPC accounts.

Right, I am fairly new here and on facebook. What names are you under on facebook and what businesses do you all run?

I run a drainage and buildings maintenance company serving London and the Home counties. Willing to help any member here if quoting the UKBF.

On Facebook I am Tomasso Limited.

I have added Arabella Millar and will add Boho's.

With regards.

Peter.

Hi Jane,

Facebook is a great way to promote your business, i think it's more popular than MySpace now as well. We actually developed part our of viral marketing campaign around a character-driven application that integrates & lets you post to facebook/myspace, which is now starting to spread nicely.

I think joining the facebook groups is very useful when it comes to spreading the word, something we'll be doing as well very shortly if anyone can recommend some good ones?!

How have you found Myspace in comparison to Facebook?

Hi Al,

I started off on MySpace but once I tried Facebook I didn't go back. I prefer the layout on Facebook and it seems much more user friendly. I do wonder whether I should keep up a presence on MySpace as well though. What do you mean by the 'character driven application'?

If anyone reading this hasn't looked at Al's website go there now and have a look at the character you can create. I've been sitting here chuckling to myself creating what turned into quite a weird looking character!! It's a good idea because I will no doubt forward your web address to some of my friends to have a go - is this what is called viral marketing?!

What is your address on Facebook? Had a look and couldn't find you. I'm here if anyone wants to be my friend!

I have tried to register as a friend, but it keeps asking for a valid email. I am beginning to feel victimised by facebook now!

I just CANNOT get on.

Nina, have you joined Facebook? You need to do a free registration before you can register friends

Hi Jane,

Sorry, by 'character-driven' i meant what you were kindly pointing everyone to (the create your own character area of our site)! There is a feature within it that also lets you post your character to your facebook or myspace page (as well as the email function). This aspect is a form of viral marketing using websites such as facebook to help spread a brand/website by letting people add something fun/different to their profile.

I'll look you up on facebook shortly!

Hi
I have recently set up a Facebook page. The bonus is everytime a message is posted or someone becomes a fan, this shows up in peoples news feeds, seeing as this is the first page you are greeted with when you sign into Facebook its great free advertising!
We have noticed a small increase in traffic to our website since starting the page a week ago.
If any of you are interested in becoming a BareSatsuma fan please do, dont think I can post a link so you may have to manually search for me.
Im now off to become a fan! :-))

Hi Jane,

I emailed Facebook about this 2 days ago and they got back to me yesterday to say that the problem had been rectified. I did a search for us yesterday and we came up but obviously the glich is back again.

Im not allowed to post a link, but if you type in the usual facebook address in your browser then add /pages/BareSatsuma/9780119618 that should take you there!

Thanks
Tanya

PS What is your page called?

Gotcha! - My page is here - I've also got a couple of pages on there to do with my business but only really of interest to people living in Wrexham, North Wales, so won't bore everyone with them here!
