Using Facebook to market a business

I have finally worked out how to post a business presence on Facebook.

And lo and behold! I wake up this morning to find I have one fan - a scarily topless RayB!!!

Regards, Alison

The profile pic is a dare ;) But I have changed it back now....

Happy to become your fan Alison :)

Well, I have registered with facebook, with my new google email address, and was assured that my registration details would follow. That was yesterday, and still nothing.

I am beginning to feel victimised now!

I have just started advertsing on various different Walls in gambling groups and the like so hopefully it will help. How do you go about doing one of the business things that was mentioned earlier on here.

great thread btw

If you want a comprehensive approach to face book strategy - it is worth either enrolling on the

Immediate edge programme (dan raine ed dale) which also is also a good guide on how to do SEO using web 2 resources and long tail sites.
( a couple of members of this forume are there)...you can enrol for one month, and download the 10 part facebook marketing strategy!! and since it is on a month money back guarantee! - shhh!!! I didnt say that.

Or ( not sure if it is still open) but Stompernet ( a membership site of most of the worlds top internet marketers) has just released the SMARTS programme on social network marketing starting now - you can watch the "going natural 2 videos" for free - not related but fascinating for all that on stomperblog.

Finally...look out in may/june for a new network called GOT2ACCESS - when google is your parnter, and yahoo offers you $250m a year before the doors are even open - you had better believe it will be big - woth getting in early.

Thank you, its an eye-opening thread. I surely would love to use the facebook marketing features. Thinking of enrolling for the programme you mentioned.

I have a question. What is the difference between having a Company Page or Group on Facebook? Should you have both?

We now have both, I posted our page earlier in the thread and today I setup our group here. Seems to me they do similar things; am I missing something?

According to Facebook, pages are better optimized for businesses and brands. According to their website: "Facebook Pages allow artists, businesses, and brands to showcase their work and interact with fans. These pages come pre-installed with custom functionality designed for each category. For example, a band Page has a music player, video player, discography, reviews, tour dates, a discussion board that the artists can take advantage of. Third party developers will also build an array of applications that they will compete for Page Admins to add to their Pages. Facebook Pages are also not subject to a fan limit and can automatically accept fan requests."

Groups I imagine are more for causes and people with something in common joining together. I think the pages on Facebook are fairly new (correct me if I'm wrong) and were set up specifically for businesses. No doubt a lot more applications will be added to make them more effective.

I've just found another great use for Facebook. I often send out press releases to promote my business and I've just discovered Facebook polls. I set up a poll last night and I've already got the results from 100 people. Amazing! It will add a bit of oomph to any press releases "A recent poll by Redfern Media revealed that 51 per cent of respondents..." It cost $25. Find more info here: http://www.facebook.com/help.php?page=30.

Hi, can anyone give Fuzzy the link on facebook for starting a page so people can become a fan ???? I cannot find it for the life of me  I have a group, where people can add, but not a fan page. Thanks :D

A page displays your business website URL. On a page too you can always link to your profile page by becoming a fan yourself. If you want to link to your Group I think you would have to add a link on your wall or somewhere. I don't think there are any benefits to having a group and a page though (but I'm no expert!)

Must admit ive been on facebook a bit and although its good for some networking , I cant say Ive got any business from it in terms of photographic jobs, However there is concern over the copyright and useage of images so I think that puts me off uploading my best work .

I find that the page does drive people to my website though not many sign up as fans! I know this page won't be of much interest to many of you out there but if anyone would like to sign up as a fan temporarily just to help me make it look a bit more established I'd be very grateful!! Page is here.;)

Does anyone know do I add an application to my BUSINESS PAGE not my PERSONAL PAGE?

I just set up a Facebook page for the business, and it automatically sets me as the admin. OK. But what I want to do is to add on of the RSS reader applications, so I can get my BUSINESS Facebook page to display the headlines of my business blog. But every time I try to load an app ( instigating the process from my BUSINESS page) , it adds it to my PERSONAL page instead. Help would be most appreciated.

Hi There,
Do the links in Facebook work towards your backlink count in Google?
Regards
Darren

Some would suggest a links a link. However, put your sensible hat on for a moment. The reason links are valuable is they are a vote for your site. They are saying "this site is a good resource". That's the simplistic overview of links.

Right, so far so good. If it's possible the site linking and saying "this site is good" could have been authored by the same person as the site being linked from what would you - as Mr Google - think. You might think, mmmmm, not sure I can trust this vote.

All just IMHO ;)

I have come onto this thread a little late - just used the search function and have read through this thread.

I would be really grateful if those of you who use facebook would become a fan of my business: - http://www.facebook.com/pages/Cardiff-United-Kingdom/Maverick-Property-Management/10840541471

Not because I think that you all suddenly would like to rent a house, but because I am using the notion, that sucess breeds sucess (or something like that).

If you would like me to return the favour, then please drop me a PM or a facebook message, and I will happily become a fan of your business.

ANother question, which I am sure I can find out through Facebook but if anyone knows the answer.... for the 'ads', how specific can you be in the networks - i.e. can I ask my ad to only be shown to peope in a certain network, such as 'Uni of x'?

Many thanks,

John

I have tried everything to get into Facebook, but even my new google email will not prompt a response. I managed to register, but some four weeks down the line, have still not received a confirmation email from them!

Hi John,

From Facebook: "Instead of creating an advertisement and hoping that it reaches the right customers, you can create a Facebook Social Ad and target it precisely to the audience you choose. The ads can also be shown to users whose friends have recently engaged with your Facebook Page or engaged with your website through Facebook Beacon. Social Ads are more likely to influence users when they appear next to a story about a friend's interaction with your business." You can target unis/colleges etc.

More info here. The polls are very good too - I use the results in press releases.

I've tried this but I think it really depends on your product. Lots of kids.

Hi Jane, yes facebook is good fun and also a helpful marketing tool. There are all sorts of good and wonderful networking groups on the place, even got a UKBF group on there.

I just tried searching for you on the place but search facility aint working at the moment, so I can't go ask you to become a friend.

Have you posted up your group on your local marketplace, as its a local thing? Also join other groups related to it and post on their boards etc, much as you would do on here. Also send out messages to all the friends you have on the place, go search the groups and get people to become friends with you etc. Its all about spreading your network across what you feel is relevant groups.

Hi Jane,

Thanks for the reply and the link.

Pretty tempted to look into that carefully as I reckon it could be very cost effective if you can really cancel down who sees your ad and who doesn't.

Thanks,

John

The whole web 2.0 thing and social networking thing is important to marketing. It is another way to get yourself out there. Not all social networks are created equal and depending on your business each social network can market to a different audience.

myspace is probably the youngest age group and you can market the most edgy here.
facebook is more college aged kids, more upscale, tons and tons of people use it. Great way to just let people know about your business.
UK Konnects is another social network, but it is more focused on business and less focused on personal things. Good for B2B relationships.

Right there, I just picked three different social sites that have a different audience for each one. All free ways of getting your business out there. I think the important thing is to know with web 2.0 and social networking is choice. There are tons of ways to market to lots of people. Just choose the one that works for you business and go for it. Most you are going to lose is your time, who knows how much you can gain from it.

I use the paid advertising - while it hasn't seen a huge rush of peeps to my site, it hasn't cost me much and I am able to target very effectively using the interests option.

It will be interesting to see how the paid advertising develops over time.
