Hello,
I recently set up a business in the UK and operate as a Sole Trader, and have just picked up a client from Canada... problem is I have no idea where to start with taking money from overseas.
Do you have any advice on anything I should do differently with my Invoice, and a recommended method of how I should receive payment (assuming its not as straight forward as a bank transfer).

Open a CAD (Canadian dollar) Wise (was TranserWise) account. Customer will be able to transfer into it in their local currency. You receive it almost instantly with excellent exchange rate.

That's assuming the Canadian banking system is not as antiquated as the US where setting up electronic payments can be very difficult.

Obviously don't know what your business is, but if you're selling goods that you've made in UK, then your buyers can take advantage of the new Canadian / UK trade agreement and avoid import duty, see:
This replaces the old CETA policy that applied when we were in the EU. You need to be clear on your (commercial) invoice about the origin of the goods and it's a must to include a preference statement as duty will be due otherwise. Even then, the receiving customs may overlook this, but they have no excuse should you challenge it.
