UK Hosting Companies

Hi, I'm looking for advice on UK hosting companies for my new website. My current website is hosted by a US shopping cart and I am moving my website and would like to use a UK hosting company. Are there any UK hosting companies you recommend? If so, why do you recommend them? I know of hostgator but they are also based in the US.

I would strongly recommend Vidahost.com. PM if you want a direct link .. I can't add it here as I am too new (I've just been told)

This is a UK company based in Bath. I currently have four sites with them.

Before taking out hosting for my first I looked at various forums and review sites for hosting companies; this came out very high. Many of the well known companies, as well known because of their advertising, but their customer service is not as good.

Being new to the web design game i have asked a few qustions to the Vidahost support team, even at obscure hours and always get a reply within a few minutes.

I think the company is small but u in a vey pofesioal way.

Their basc hosting package is £17 / year (+ VAT) witht their top package at £198 for 3 years (+ VAT)

Visit the site and see for yourself ... even ask a couple of questions and see what the response time is like. I actually did that before I joined any host and Vidahost were very good in that regards as well as economic.

Threads like this generally attract lots of recommendations in here so here's my 2p.

I have lots of sites hosted with 1&1. Their service ies reasonably reliable but I definitely cannot recommend them. Their servers are actually located in Germany so this could be an issue for SEO Also, their support organisation is the worst I have ever encountered anywhere and in any walk of life. It is just unbelievably bad.

Right, having got that off my chest I can happily recommend UK Web Solutions Direct. They are based in Stockton-on-Tees and their support and pricing is really good. Any time I have emailed them I have received a very prompt reply, normally within 30 minutes. More importantly (unlike 1&1's numpties) they know what they are talking about and they can interpret any problems you are having and assist you with these.

(For obvious reasons I would discount hosting companies in here who recommend themselves.)

If you are going to be a big site, you will need to look further than shared/reseller account or providers. Take a look at dedicated servers then you have full freedom.

You can use a VPS before a dedicated server.

I worked with aspnethosting.co.uk if what you need is asp.net hosting. I can say they are good, nice people working there (never had problems like "why are they not answering?"). And the host itself is fine.

1and1 are pretty bad as well- same parent company.

If you don't need much in the way of space/traffic/ram then a shared host will be the cheapest option. Do look into the costs of extras such as a dedicated ip address if you need a SSL, or extra databases, number of mailboxes, etc

Other important considerations are things like telephone support or the time taken to respond to support tickets.

Take the recommendations given here and then google them.

Personally I prefer go with firms that have active forums. It is nice to see how the firms respond to issues/questions.

I know it's too late now but for reference to anyone else, I'm with Site5 and use the location service to host in the UK and I've had fantastic support also.
