Nope, I was having trouble getting on for a while now and thought "Where could I get the most up to date info on the status of Twitter...?" and checked here

Someone in the Sift Media office suggested Twitter has taken down the site to deal with the recent increase in spammers.

DOS Attack = Denial of Service Attack

Basically it means that their servers are being deliberately flooded with more requests than thy can cope with.

Here's a quote from one news source - and it's tagged as a developing story:

Twitter said in its status blog Thursday that it was "defending against a denial-of-service attack," in which hackers command scores of computers to a single site at the same time, preventing legitimate traffic from getting through.

Facebook also seemed to be experiencing problems, at least intermittently. A Facebook spokeswoman said the company was looking into it and would have an update "as soon as possible."

I've heard an (unconfirmed) rumour that twitter, facebook and livejournel have all been the victim of this DDOS attack as a result of this business with the Iran elections.

Some users are unable to update on the web using Firefox 3.5. Other actions like following and sending DMs are also affected.

Seems I was off the mark a little. According to techcrunch, seems Russia is trying to bulldoze the most popular social media platforms, in an attempt to silence Georgian users, or possibly just one called Cyxymu. Which has really done the complete opposite.

Yesterday's technical assault on Twitter and other social-networking websites, such as Facebook and Livejournal, is known as a distributed denial of service attack. This technique uses a network of tens of thousands of compromised computers, known as a "botnet", to flood a website's servers with page view requests, leaving legitimate traffic unable to get through. This huge amount of connection requests can quickly overwhelm a server and, in some cases, cause an entire website to crash.
