We are determining the cause and will provide an update shortly.
That has to be the most comprehensive status report I have ever read. I wonder how many times they proof read it before posting it online ;)

    It's a DOS attack.

Based on what evidence? There was schedule maintenance today, so it's more likely that.

Here's a quote from one news source - and it's tagged as a developing story:

Twitter said in its status blog Thursday that it was "defending against a denial-of-service attack," in which hackers command scores of computers to a single site at the same time, preventing legitimate traffic from getting through.

Facebook also seemed to be experiencing problems, at least intermittently. A Facebook spokeswoman said the company was looking into it and would have an update "as soon as possible."

Problems with updating from Firefox 3.5 13 hours ago

Some users are unable to update on the web using Firefox 3.5. Other actions like following and sending DMs are also affected.
We’re working on solving this problem.

Restoring API and SMS 16 hours ago

Due to defensive measures we’ve taken against the ongoing denial-of-service attack, some Twitter clients are unable to communicate with our API, and many users are unable to tweet via SMS.
We are working as quickly as possible to restore our full service.
It's not only affecting FireFox, I can't post with Opera or Epiphany either.
    Tweetdeck access is intermittent.

Is it just me or is anyone else having trouble getting on to twitter this afternoon?

What is a denial of service attack?
Twitter crashed yesterday after a suspected malicious attack by Russian hackers to silence a pro-Georgian blogger. But what is a denial of service attack? And how easy it is to carry out?

Yesterday's technical assault on Twitter and other social-networking websites, such as Facebook and Livejournal, is known as a distributed denial of service attack. This technique uses a network of tens of thousands of compromised computers, known as a "botnet", to flood a website's servers with page view requests, leaving legitimate traffic unable to get through. This huge amount of connection requests can quickly overwhelm a server and, in some cases, cause an entire website to crash.
