Toxic Links - Do they matter anymore?

It was never really a problem. I've discovered some really awful links to my sites and it hasn't made any difference. Google ignores most links by default so I wouldn't worry about it.

I've found my site in a guest post blog article that's appeared on a few different sites. I have absolutely no idea why it's there - I've never engaged an SEO person to do it, and it looks for all the world like either an outdated SEO technique, probably done by someone in a third-world country, or some wierd black-hat SEO.

Or who knows, it might be a competitor trying to bring down my ranking. Good luck to them, if this is how they're trying to do it.

Is there not a way to resolve it?
Yes, contact every website where there is a toxic link and ask them to remove the link. Or do what all sensible people do and ignore them.

Or upload a disavow file to google console - but if its not a problem then it's not worth the effort, hence my question

Doing that can cause more problem as Google can divide to delve deeper and you can discover you ranking goes down.
