Tax Return Filing

For those who care - and that includes me - Lord Carter has today changed his recommendation about tax return filing dates

Paper returns will now have to be filed by the end of October but the filing date for electronic returns will remain at 31st January The original proposal was September for paper and November for electronic

I am very happy about that as it would have caused major problems in accountants' offices throughout the country. We would all have had to give up summer holidays and take up ski-ing in the winter !! What would I have done with my beach hut?

To be perfectly honest...I don't really care, in fact I think he should stick to his original recommendations. I currently ensure that all returns are filed online and the change in dates would mean a much more enjoyable Christmas.

Christmas ? whats that? being on the receiving end of tax returns, I miss my other half for two months, and not as he is disorganised, far from it, but due to clients thinking they are the only ones whose returns he has to file and like to leave everthing to the last minute!

We have filed virtually every return online since ELS started in 1998 and now file using FBI. Unfortunately we have a very large client base and it would be almost impossible for us to file everything before the end of November - after all, we've only just finished the P35s and the P11Ds - now to start on the tax returns

Perhaps Tax filing should be done alphabetically by month to allow Accountants to have a Christmas break, or, move Christmas.

So you're still doing your accounts work on 13 column analysis paper then are you Dean

God them were the days! All hale excel and IRIS, Couldn't imagine a secretary typing out accounts now! You'd only have about 10 clients if that were the case nowadays.

But isn't it a shame that IRIS seems a little bit less robust these days. WE are getting problems that we would never have had in the past - as an example tax returns with foreign income are being rejected by HMRC at the moment and we are still awaiting a patch to fix the problem

I actually only use IRIS for Accounts Production, so not sure what the rest of there software is like. I use Taxcalc for SA100 and 800 returns this is very good. I then use the good old revenue webby for the CT600s

So now this has gone completely off topic, but as Bob as joined in I will add my bit

When I first started up in practice I found the best 'value for money' tax packages was PTP and I have stuck with it ever since. I am currently planning on using their accounts production software as well (Whenever I get a quiet time to plan its implementation and training but currently cannot see when that will be.......just too busy).

Well fortunately i'm not a bean counter and a large amount of my work comes from helping clients develop their business not partnership/self employed self assessment returns.

Also you may discover that limited company returns don't come under the same dealines

Same here. PTP has "plug and play" appeal as far as I'm concerned. If you can fill in a tax return by hand then you can use PTP with no training a all.

It's interesting how many of us stick with whatever software we start off with due to the lack of time to test drive anything else. Since I started I've used VT accounts for accounts production but have demo discs for Digita and PTP still waiting to be tried out.

Oh well, if it ain't broke...

Yes, most people do, but there is nothing wrong with that as the one you are used to is also the most productive.

Interesting, that's exactly what my accountant does every Feb, ski-ing I mean, just after the 31st Jan deadline.

Carters report is only recommendation. I believe the Revenue will force the original recommendations through.
