I need to submit VAT returns. I signed up using an accounting software zoho books. it shows that It has integrated to HMRC but I can not file. Does anyone know of a free accounting tool (or if they use zoho books and it works. then how) that I can easy use for VAT filling?

Have you tried speaking to Zoho Books' customer service. Surely their software not working properly is something they would want to sort out?

I use vitaltax. It's an add on to excel.
It's not free but only costs about 20 per year I think.
I've used it for the past couple of years.
It was recommended to me by my accountant - and seems to work fine.

I link it to cells on the excel version of my bank statement- which calculate quarterly revenue, costs, VAT et cetera

If you bank with NatWest, Mettle, RBS or Ulster Bank FreeAgent is free and works well. I use it myself and have many clients now using it.

What error are you getting? It's usually the wrong settings somewhere in the software.

Here is the error message:

“looks like you have not successfully migrated to MDT. Integration has there been disabled. Please contact support for future assistance”

I googled the error message and found zoho’s suggested solution to this which I did but still the same error. Their tech team are looking into it but no response / update yet.

Have you filed a vat return before? How long have you waited between registering and trying to file? It may be that you need HMRC to update before the software will let you file (it's not always instant no matter what they may say). My advice potentially would be to wait until next week and try again.

I remember looking at the long list of UK approved MTD VAT solutions.

How to choose? I scrolled the list and one jumped out at me - EmbeddedUK Ltd

Their area of expertise was Embedded Systems - which suggested to me a precise, non-bloated approach to problem solving. That was the only basis on which I made the choice!

Ever since then I've been using their MTD VAT Filing software. A small initial cost of £30 I think (better check that) and then totally free from then onwards.

Thanks all for your comments and recommendations. All issues resolved now. Turns out it was a small error with mismated input data.

Glad you got it sorted.

Zoho Books supports MTD VAT filing, but if it’s not allowing you to submit, it's usually because your MTD for VAT registration isn’t fully activated, the VAT period in Zoho doesn’t match HMRC’s period, or the MTD permissions weren't granted correctly. Try disconnecting Zoho from HMRC, then reconnect and re-authorise with your Government Gateway credentials.
Most fully free tools don’t support MTD filing, but some HMRC-approved bridging tools offer free or low-cost VAT submissions. If Zoho still doesn’t work, using a bridging tool for this period might be the quickest fix.
