Start Up Grants North East

Hi All,

my brother and i are in the process of opening up a Tanning salon in the North East. The business will be in my brothers name who is 24 years old. The building we are taken over the lease from was Tattoo shop, so all electrics will have to be converted (Phase 3) and the store remodeled.

I was wondering what start up grants are available for him, we have managed to secure one through a company for local businesses which is for £800 and money towards legal fees etc.

Are there any other ones in general, specific to our area, my brothers age, or the fact we are remodeling the store?

I have put him forward for The Princes Trust scheme, which from first glance gives him business tuition and will help him with basic skills etc. They mentioned to him on the phone that they could secure him a business loan of upto £750 at 6% APR.

I am simply hunting round for free start up money or skills that would be useful to him, any information would be greatly appreciated.

Your local council should be able to tell you what grants are available in your area, however you're unlikely to get one for fitting out your shop. Most grants are focused on things that benefit the wider community, such as job creation or green energy.

From many years advising start ups I know that the grant process is often slow and very time consuming and the numbers of available grants is much lower now than it once was.

Many of my clients have ended up finding it easier and more straightforward getting angel or crowd funding to kick off a project than to go for multiple grants. Good luck with it though, never easy to start a business.

No lease has not been agreed as i am awaiting the price for phase 3 wiring from northern power grid as this differs massively depending on store location. And i do have enough cash for start up but i was simply asking if there was any grants out there that help start up businesses you mong

Have you checked out the governments start up loans scheme?

Thanks Law Hound, anything relating to free money is never going to be straight forward i guess. The offer of business tuition from the princes trust for my brother sounds like it may be benefitial wonder how useful it actually is tho.
