Speed cameras are the curse of the driver. I for one hate them. Been done tell us about it

I think it's a very broad debate that can touch on many areas. I drive, and also ride a scooter, and trust me - the problem is not the cameras - it's the drivers.

I suppose, in essence, if you obey the law - you have nothing to worry about.

Realisitically - it is safe to drive faster than 70mph if you're a good driver. But that's the key thing. IF you are a good driver.

I see so many drivers that should be nowhere near a road - never mind telling them they're allowed to go faster!

When I'm on my scooter you really get a good opinion of the state of drivers... trust me - the majority of people on the roads are morons.

For me - the question is not whether cameras should go - it's a question of clamping down on people with no licences, no insurance.

I suspect the real reason we need speed limits is to save money for the NHS. This is the real reason why driving under the influence of alcohol is punished so severely.

The saving of lives is a side effect of such policies, but is invariably cited by politicians as the primary reason for such policies. That's politics.

Policies like this work in the short run, but in the long run contribute to another problem - a larger number of retired people who need to be taken care of by tax payers.

This leads to other policies like raising the retirement age and attracting immigrants.

I agree with having speed cameras because I believe it increases the probability of me living longer.

I think they should also implement cameras or radar to ensure that everyone maintains a 2 second gap between their car and the one in front. I HATE tail-gaters.

What I don't understand is why drivers complain about speed cameras and getting a ticket. I am a driver and I agree there should be speed cameras even if the Govt generate revenue from it. If drivers do not wish for the Govt to generate revenue, its simple, don't speed!

I can be a tail-gater sometimes but only when the 1st and 2nd lanes are clear and I see this idiot hogging the 3rd lane. I just wish people consider moving to the left on a frequent basis rather than staying in the same lane all the way.

Dave, I am guessing that tail-gaters don't exist in Aussie You have guessed I have not been! I visualise Aussie to have long wide roads like near Ayers Rock! One car every 2 miles!

I speed alot, and get caught on occasion....

fortunately there are no speed cameras here and the police are still quite corrupt, so a cash payment equal to about £10 - 20 is normally enough to avoid any paperwork.

My record so far has been 185km/h in a 90 limit, that cost me £20

I got my first ticket about 3 months after passing my test! I came off a slip-road and joined a dual carriageway and there was a police car waiting just after the 30MPH sign. I was decreasing speed but he decided to issue me with a ticket.

On another occasion I have argued with a Police Officer because I overtook a Police Land Rover on the M62 and then 2 miles later he decided to pull me up. Said I was speeding because I overtook him! If everyone did 70 there would be a pile-up! The officer did not have the speedograph on and I said he has no evidence other than me and many other cars overtaking him! He was bored because it was Sunday!

Yes, I will challange a Police Officer within reason. They hate laywers so much!

VSHosting - it was the same here in the Republic of Georgia where you could pay a Police Officer. Not now though. However, the Police here are not so responsive and enjoy playing with their cars and flashing the neon lights in non-emergencies.

I couldn't agree more. People who drive slowly whilst in any lane other than the one furthest to the left are actually really dangerous. It's illegal to undertake, so it means they are holding up traffic. It's a personal gripe of mine that people don't realise how dangerous it can be.

Tail-gaters are everywhere, and usually make the same excuses as you!

The roads in and around the cities are wide and very easy to drive on. They are busy but nowhere near as congested as in the UK. Because the roads are so wide, you would think they were safer. However, a few years ago the government made a comparison between some road accident data from around Australia, and some from the UK. It sounds amazing, but it was found that there were twice as many road accidents, per capita, in Australia than in the UK.

Now generally, I would say that the Aussies are slower drivers than Pomms. So why should there be twice as many accidents? Government spokesman seemed to be clueless as to why this should be so.

My theory is because, up until that time at least, it only took about 3 or 4 driving lessons before a learner could be capable of passing a test. I remember having to take 27 lessons before I passed my test in the UK. Moreover, a learner in Australia could pass a test in an automatic car, then be free to drive an automatic or a manual gear change. Rediculous.

I believe speed camera's are good in trying to prevent people who ignore the limit's of driving law's. I just hate the one's who are mobile in vans that do not even look like speed camera vans. I passed one the day my youngest was born and I swear down there was no van or camera at the side of the road. I thought the Law stated that the camera had to be visible. Oh well. as for speeding on motorways I think it should be allowed after 10pm when the roads are pretty quiet. and speed restrictions come into force at say 5am

to an extent i do agree with speed cameras. If they are placed where ppl do def speed

For example, someone said they got caught coming off a dual carriage way, now hwat is the point of someone sitting there.

There is also the 10% plus two rule, i havre heard of ppl being hammered by police for being within this. If it was me, i would refuse to accpt it, and ask to be taken to court.

Now we are hearing of these Gatso Cameras not working properly.
Truth is i hate speed cameras. We all speed to an extend. But we drive at a speed that is appropriate to the conditions
