Soundcard for Windows 7

My soundcard keeps causing my machine to blue screen and crash dump.

I'm pretty sure it is the soundcard as it doesn't happen when I take it out and it throws an audio related error on the bluescreen.

This PC is pretty much brand new and has uses Windows 7 OS, I am going to purchase a new soundcard but obviously I don't want the same thing to keep happening. Can anyone offer any advice on what I should be looking for, should I just be checking the soundcard is compatible with Windows 7 or should I be looking for motherboard compatibility as well?

(The soundcard did not come with my PC by the way, I took it out of an older machine).

Which drivers are you using? The ones windows 7 installed itself or from manufacturers CD? Check manufacturers website, if they support Win 7.

Thanks Rob, I must admit, I've only used the CD to install the drivers which of course came out before Windows 7 was even invented so that could well be the case.

Trying to identify the manufacture is not proving easy though, doesn't mention on the CD and isn't obvious from the contents of the disc either, may have to resort to opening the case to see what is wrote on the card...

Go to Control Panel, Hardware/Device manager, click on that device, then open this and copy that row of code:

Hi,

update: I didn't notice a couple replies to this thread as I was chatting to someone and then finished my reply!

Good advice from Rob and the best route. Plus stick the soundcard back in another slot on your computers motherboard.

If your still having problems, then check to see if your using a rebranded piece of hardware. You might get lucky and find newer drivers that way.

A driver filename, chipset details or perhaps forum natter found via google search should help you find out if you are. Obviously you use different drivers at your own risk.

I've never done that for a soundcard, but for scanners, network adapters, webcam and other hardware. It's meant newer drivers, drivers for newer operating systems and new features.

Sorry to read your sound stopped working. As you've got a soundcard, it could be that your motherboard has onboard sound also? Worth checking out if the correct device is selected for playback.

For Windows 7:
1. Right click on the speaker icon in your system tray (bottom right of the screen, usually next to the clock / date).
2. Select Playback devices.
3. See if a green tick is next to the correct device. If not find the correct device and select 'enable' and set as the default device.

Sorry I forgot to update my post, I have managed to get it working by downloading and installing another driver (there were loads for my soundcard it seemed) and now I have sound and fingers crossed, no blue screen yet.

Hi,
the exact same issue happened to me also. I had BSODS a lot on win7 32 bit ultimate.
I updated the driver and fingers crossed since then. Its working out good. :)
