If you are a sole trader and not VAT registered, Is it a legal requirement to provide each customer an invoice for your service?
Or can you simply keep records of the sale/service by your bank account statement and maybe a receipt? I am thinking of times when it is not feasible, for example, a one off payment from a customer who wishes to pay straight away after your service.

Thanks.

An invoice isn't just for VAT purposes, you should always issue an invoice, all your business customers will need a receipt/invoice anyway, regardless of VAT. If you issue one as standard it'll stop you getting bogged down with people requesting them,

As others have said it's OK not to issue an invoice but you may find it helps with your bookkeeping or if you have any issues on a job done depending what work you do.

What system do you use for invoicing and what business do you run?

Good question, and a really common one for sole traders.

Not legally required if you are not VAT registered, but best practice for sure. Clients often need something for their own records, and it saves arguments later.

The main thing is keeping some record of each job so your Self Assessment is not a nightmare in January.

For a quick free option, landolio.com has a free invoice generator that needs no account, fill in the details and download as PDF. They also have polished premium template packs if you want something more branded (50% off right now with code LAUNCH50 for anyone interested).

Will it be free for the 3 years of invoicing the OP needs to catch up on? 🤣🤣
